TWO BOYS DROWNED

CANOE CAPSIZES AT GISBORNE, January 16. Two schoolboys who had ventured on the Taruhera river yesterday without their parents' knowledge were drowned when the canoe which they had commandeered capsized in midstream. The victims were:—

Bruce William Foss, aged 11, younger son of Mr and Mrs Percy Foss. Maurice Gabolinscy, aged 10, son of Mr and Mrs A. Gabolinscy.

The boys left home about 10 a.m. with the understanding that they were going to visit Foss's grandmother. When Mr Foss returned from work last evening he went to fetch the boys only to find that they had not reached their avowed destination. He then searched the riverbank and found his son's bicycle. The police were notified and an immediate search was begun. Gabolinscy's body was found at 8.30 p.m., but that of Foss was not recovered until this morning. ." Subsequent inquiries showed that the boys had gone to the river during the morning and were seen by another small boy to get into a canoe moored on the riverbank. After a time the canoe drifted into midstream, where it capsized. .
