OBITUARY

MR C. S. GRIFFITHS

One of the first three taxi ownerdrivers in Christchurch, Mr Clarence Sydney Griffiths died in the city recently, aged 62. He was a member of the first city traffic committee, and a member of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) for 20 years. Before his retirement recently. Mr Griffiths was a well-known hotel proprietor. After serving in the South African war, Mr Griffiths returned to New Zealand, and in 1907 joined the New Alpine Gold Mining Company/ Ltd.. at Lyell. Nelson, as assistant mine accountant, assistant assayer. and assistant in the cyanide plant. He was accountant, assayer, and in charge of the cyanide plant for 12 months to the time when the firm was reorganised financially and the services of all but prospectors had to be dispensed with. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. After . his retirement from business he resided at Leithfield Beach.

MR N. WILSON

DUNEDIN, January 16. The death of Mr Newman Wilson oc-. curred at Brighton, Dunedin, at the age of 51 years. Mr Wilson was born in Waimate, and was a son of Mr Robert L. Wilson, and received his education at the Waimate District High School. He later joined the staff of Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd.. and the C.F.C.A., Waimate, and was for a considerable time manager of the Otago Farmers' Co-op. Association. Serving in the Great War, he had a distinguished military career, being awarded the D.S.O. and the M.C., and ranking as a lieutenant-colonel. After the war he was officer in command of the South Canterbury Battalion of the Territorial Forces. Since the present war began he had been appointed to the command of the National Military Reserve, Group 2 ■ . Mr Wilson was a past president of the. Dunedin Chamber of Commerce and a past president of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers* Association. He was also a member of both the Accountants' Association and the Otago Chapter of the New Zealand Institute of Certified Secretaries. _ . In 1911 he married Miss Beatrice Taylor, ? daughter of Mrs J. A. Taylor Dunedin, who survives him. Mr George Wilson, of High street, Waimate, is a brother.
