WORK OF AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION DECLINING RESPONSE TO APPEALS REGRETTED the declining response to. appeals for funds for the St. John Ambulance Association and the need for more public recognition of the association’s work were emphasised at the meeting of the Rangiora sub-centre of the association on Wednesday evening. The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) presided. Advocating that the public should be educated to realise the value of work being done and that newspapers be utilised more in giving publicity to this work. Dr. L. M. King praised the service given but commented*on the decreased response to street appeals. Commander C. H. Kersley (secretary of the Christchurch centre) also commented on the declining response to appeals both in Christchurch and Rangiora, and cited a statement in the Rangiora report showing that’ the result of an appeal in 1938 had been £24, compared with £9 this year. Each year, he said, the list of possible collectors submitted grew smaller. This was unfortunate when one remembered the excellent service rendered for little money. Personally he would favour a house-to-house canvass for the city. FORMER SCHOOL PUPILS ANNUAL MEETING HELD AT KAIAPOI The president (Mr W. H. Stark) presided at the annual meeting of the Kaiapoi School Old Scholars’ Association, held in the Foresters’ Hall, Kaiapoi. The committee reported that* the association’s. membership was now 378, showing ah increase of 68. There had been a large and representative gathing at the annual reunion held in November, old scholars attending from all parts of the Dominion. During the summer excellent work had been carried out by Mr F. Priest, who had been engaged by the association to teach swimming to the pupils attending the Kaiapoi School. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £24 12s 7d, The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr L. R. Oram; vice-presidents, Mrs T. R. Leithead and Mr P. G. Hunt; secretary, Mrs K. McIntosh; treasurer, Mr F. Bryden; committee, Mesdames R. W. Wylie. H. McMillan, B. Forrest, and F. Griffiths, Misses P. Pearce and E. Clarke, Messrs W. H. Stark, J. Johnston, G. H. Forrest, H. J. Mclntosh. W. T. Johnston, . and K. Mclntosh; trustees. Messrs L. R. Oram and P. G. Hunt. It was .decided that the association’s annual reunion be held this year on •Saturday afternoonfi November 11, and that it be followed by a social evening. It was resolved that arrangements be made for the renovation of the headstone erected by the association to the memory of Mr R. J. Alexander in the Kaiapoi public cemetery. PERSONAL NOTES PREBBLETON Mrs A. J. McNally has returned to Sefton after a visit to Prebbleton. Mrs W. O. Downey (Prebbleton) is visiting Greymouth, where Miss Fay Downey is taking part in the competitions. ASHLEY BANK Mr T. Ford, New Ashley Hotel, has returned home from a cruise of the South Sea Islands. GOLF AMBERLEY CLUB The bogey handicap played recently by the Amberley Golf Club was won by E. J. Little with a card of 2 down. In the men’s senior championship semi-finals, A. Holland beat E. J. Little and W. Parsons beat C. A. Wornall. In the men’s junior championship seini-final, W. Wade beat W. Rhodes, and J. South beat J. Schofield. In the women’s senior championship semi-finals, Mrs Boyce beat Mrs Martyn, and Miss Grierson beat Miss Armstrong. In the junior semi-finals, Fiona Shier beat Mrs Hayes, and Gwen Hislop beat Mrs Sloacombe. RUGBY FOOTBALL KOWAI TEAM The Kowai Rugby team to play Old Boys, at Sefton, at 2.30 p.m. to-mor-row, is as follows:—H.' Jamieson, L. Giles, E. Stringer, H. Kettle. P, Ford, L. Hanna, G. Moran, A. MOTHERS’ UNION AT AKAROA A meeting of the Akaroa branch of the Mothers’ Union was held recently, whfen the vicar (Archdeacon A. J. Petrie) conducted the service, and addressed members on church matters. Mrs F, J. A. Wright, who has been a member since the Akaroa branch was formed a number of years ago., and who is leaving Akaroa to-morrow to reside in Christchurch, was presented by Archdeacon Petrie with a gold-mounted Mothers’ Union brooch, suitably inscribed. Mesdames A. J. Petrie, W. E. M. Jacobson, and C. C. Narbey also spoke of the regret felt at Mrs Wright’s departure. CARDS AT ASHLEY BANK A cards tournament in aid of school funds was recently held at Ashley Bank.: Highest scores for the evening were gained by Mrs H. W. Lock (22) and Mr L. L. Brunicombe (26). Aggregate prizes for six nights went to Miss N. Downing and Mr R. Mjiller. Mr R. Miller also won the cup for •; host points "throughout the season.,; v
