RANGIORA AMBULANCE ASSOCIATION ELECTION OP OFFICERS The success of the year just completed by the Rangiora sub-centre of the St. John Ambulance Association was the subject of favourable comment by Mr B. J. McKenna, deputy-chair-man of the Christchurch centre, at the annual meeting of the Rangiora group on Wednesday evening. The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler) presided. A credit balance of £3O 18s Id was shown. Certificates to successful Rangiora examination candidates were presented by Mr McKenna to Mesdames J. E. Hawkins, J. A. Ironside. Misses P. L. Quantick, N. Watkins, F. H. Whitley, Messrs J. J. Mcßrearty, W. Stephens, L. D. Hawkins. J. D, A. Blake, W. C. Chambers, A. Sheppard, W. Cooper, W. C. McCracken, R. Robb, L. Millar, C. Averis, J. T. LAWN TENNIS RANGIORA CLUB’S MEETING NO TEAM TO BE ENTERED IN COMPETITION A decision not to enter a team in the North Canterbury Lawn Tennis Sub-Association’s competitions was made at a meeting of the Rangiora Lawn Tennis Club on Wednesday evening. A motion that the club enter a team was introduced, but was lost after some discussion. It was decided to hold the opening day of the season on the first Saturday in October as usual. A “working bee” will be held some time before the opening day to top-dress the courts. The secretary’s report and the bal-ance-sheet were presented and passed. A credit balance of £1 4s 3d was shown. Officers elected were:—President, Mr I. Tweedie; secretary. Mr C. Amott; club captain, Mr D. Henderson; committee, Mrs I. Tweedie, Misses N. Edlin, T. Edlin, M. Stanton, Messrs J. Brereton, S. Arnott. MORE PASSENGER REVENUE RANGIORA RAILWAY RETURNS FOR AUGUST . Passenger fares and revenue show a slight increase in this year’s August railway returns at Rangiora, compared with the same month last year. Figures were, with last year’s figures in parenthesis;— Passengers 2189 (1945); cattle 111 (148); sheep 620 (583); timber, 2 tons (160); goods, 680 tons (1017); passenger revenue, £2Ol (£257); goods revenue, £561 (£631). COMPLIMENTARY SOCIAL AT BARFIELD A complimentary social was given to , the Women’s Division by members of the Darfleld branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union. Items were given by Mesdames W. W. Mulholland, A. A. Stott, J. Stewart, and Miss Patsy Beaumont. Mrs H. H. Barrs was accompanist. Dancing was held to music played by Messrs A. Hart and S. Syme. . Mr J. Green, president of the Farmers’ Union, thanked all those who contributed to the success of the evening. Mrs R. S. Gunn, president of the Women’s Division thanked the members of the Farmers’ Union for arranging the function., CARDS PARTY AT ROTHERHAM The Rotherham Women’s Institute held a cards party and social in the Rotherham Hall recently. The winners of the cards tournament were Mrs W. Allan and Mr J. Wallace. Consolation prizes were awarded to Miss Mclntosh and Mr H. .Gamblin. Music for the dance was played by Mrs A. Munro, Mr J. Montgomery, Mr R. Neale, and Miss M. Mclntosh. Mr R. Halkett was master of ceremonies. FAREWELL GATHERING AT SHEFFIELD Members of the Sheffield Athletic and Tennis Clubs gathered at the Manse, Sheffield, recently, to say farewell to the Rev. and Mrs L. W. Rothwell, who are leaving the district to make their home in Invercargill. Items were given by Mrs B. S. Morrison and Mrs H. M. Bull, and competition winners were Miss A. Chamberlain and Mr L. T. Wright. For those present, Mr H. C. Townshend presented Mr and Mrs Rothwell with a log box. Mr F. A. Bull also spoke for the athletic club. Miss I. Innes and Mr F. A. Bull provided the entertainment programme. MINIATURE RIFLES HANMER SPRINGS CLUB Best scores off the rifle at the weekly shoot of the Hanmer Springs Miniature Rifle Club were as follows:—C.
