RUGBY FOOTBALL

NORTH OTAGO V. SOUTH CANTERBURY STRONG TEAM CHOSEN The first representative Rugby football match this season will take place at the Oamaru Show Grounds to-mor-row afternoon, when North Otago will meet South Canterbury. Both teams selected are strong in the backs and forwards and a good game should be seen. Junior representative teams will play a curtain raiser to the main game —the latter will start at 2.45 p.m. The inclusion of six players from the Waitaki Sub-Union in the North Otago teahi—two in the backs and four in the forwards—has strengthened the local side. The forwards are the strongest for some seasons, and the backs have only to produce them best form to be a formidable attacking line. CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS ATHLETIC HAS BEST RECORD TO DATE With the North Otago Rugby Union’s championships now almost completed, the positions of the leading teams in some of the lower grades promise several close finishes. Athletic, winner of the Citizens’ Shield, first equal with Old Boys at the present stage of the Markham Cup competition, first in the fourth and fifth grade championships, and a close second in the third grade, has the best record so far this season. The details are as follows: — Markham Cup competition; Athletic and Old Boys, each with two championship points, are first equal. Junior Grade: Old Boys (14 points) is first, with Waitaki (13 points) second, Athletic (nine points) third, and Excelsior (eight points) fourth. Maheno, yet to score, is last. Third Grade: St. Kevin’s (16 points) is followed by Athletic, one point behind. Excelsior is third with 12 points. Fourth Grade: With 16 points, Athletic has a lead of six points from the second team, St. Kevin’s. Old Boys is third with seven points. Fifth Grade: Athletic (18 points), St. Kevin’s (16 points), School A (11 points), and School C (10 points) are the leaders.
