NAZI LEADERS IN CONFLICT

REPORTED DISSENSION IN PARTY

RUMOURS OF IMPENDING PURGE

(Received December 21, 2 p.m.)

LONDON, December 20

It is evident that the conflict between the extremists and the moderates among the Nazis is becoming increasingly acute, and it is thought that a reckoning is not far distant, states the Australian Associated Press.

According to reports, the worldwide indignation at the pogrom has resulted in a strong movement by powerful interests for the removal of the worst fanatics. The criticism has certainly been more open than at any time previously. Influential circles in London are receiving numerous letters from Germany expressing extraordinarily bold condemnation, and rumours of an impending purge are becoming increasingly strong. It is stated that the position of the Minister for Propaganda (Dr. Giibbels), the Nazi Police Chief (Herr Himmler), and the Foreign Minister (Herr von Ribbentrop) are threatened. Heir Hitler is not aware of the extent to which Dr. Gobbels and his confederates carried the Jewish measures. It is also stated that the Fiihrer was deliberately misled. He now spends most of his time in the seclusion of Berchtesgaden.
