NATIONAL SERVICE IN BRITAIN
GOVERNMENT PROPOSALS REVISED
SCHEME TO BE REVIEWED NEXT MARCH
(BKITIStI OFFICIAL WIBELES3.) RUGBY, December 20. The House of Commons resumed the debate on the national service proposals on the - Government's revised motion recommending that the results of the voluntary national service scheme be reviewed at the end of March.
Supporters of the Government, who were critical of its proposals for national service, and who had tabled an amendment favouring a compulsory national register, have withdrawn it in view of the revised motion.
The Minister for Labour (Mr Ernest Brown), opening L he debate, described the national service guide which will be delivered to householders early in the New Year. He emphasised that the efforts of the Government were directed to preserving the essential balance which the new conditions required between the defence services themselves and the industrial services necessary to sustain them. He said the industrial front in a future war would be the key of the defensive front.
Mr A. Greenwood (Labour) said the Labour Party was reserving its attitude until full details of the scheme were disclosed.
