EXTRA SPACE LEASED

POST AND TELEGRAPH DEPARTMENT ADDITIONAL GARAGE TAKEN OVER Occupancy of a large brick building in Peterborough street, for which a lease was negotiated some time ago. was taken yesterday by the Post and Telegraph Department. Extensive alterations have been made to the building, which was formerly used by Brown’s Laundry, to fit it for its new use as an additional garage for the Post and Telegraph Department. Increasing use of motor-cars and all forms of modern transport by the Government service has overcrowded the present garage in Kilmore street and the new building will be used to house part of the fleet of 90 cars and other vehicles which come under the care of the Post and Telegraph Department in its capacity as garageman to numbers of other departments. At Kilmore street the engineering workshops are situated, and in other parts of the city there are the other Workshops necessary for the complete repairing and maintenance of a large fleet of motor vehicles. A hydraulic lift for servicing and_a stand for washing cars have been installed in the new garage, which has been completely floored in concrete since the lease was taken out. The front of the building has been cut off from the garage in the rear to provide a large and well-equipped room for drivers, containing a small cooker fo; heating water and light meals, lockers and tables and forms. This room takes up one half of the front of the building on Peterborough street and the other half has been turned into offices for the garage supervisor and foreman.

In floor space the new garage is nearly as large as the present one in Kilmore street, which will continue to be used. No workshops are.being built into the new garage; but tTTe additional space which it provides will meet the requirements of the department for many years to come.
