LABOUR QUEEN CARNIVAL

CROWNING CEREMONY HELD SETTING IN NATURAL AMPHITHEATRE The crowning ceremony in the recent queen carnival organised by the branches of the Labour Party on the southern section of the South Island Main Trunk railway, and the Cheviot branch of the Labour Party, was held at the Taratuhi camp. The function was staged in a natural amphitheatre in the presence of a large number of visitors from all parts of the district. The Claverley - Taratuhi princess (Mrs C. Morrison) was crowned queen. The other princesses were as follows; Miss E. Sollitt (Parnassus-Cheviot), Miss McKechnie (Oaro), Mrs G. Burnby (Conway), and Miss Dakin (Puketa). The ceremony was under the direction of Mr J. Gregor, of Riccarton. The gathering was addressed briefly by Messrs Gregor, Popplewell, Foote, and Barnes, each of whom congratulated the queen and the various groups on the successful financial outcome of the carnival. ... A dance was held, the music being played by the Kaikoura Rhythm Orchestra.

OFFICERS OF KAIAPOI LODGE INSTALLED Sister V. Hutson presided at the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Kaiapoi Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U. The following officers were installed by P.D.G.M. Bro. H. E. Miles, Sick pay and accounts amounting to £23 3s lOd were passed for payment. Permission was received from the district management committee to hold a past officers’ degree meeting, when P.D.G.M. Bro. A. E. Brown will confer the past officers’ degrees on P.G Bro. M. H. Lilley, P.G. Bro. T. E. Ayers, and P.G. Bro. J. L. Leithead. It was decided to make presentations to P.D.G.M. Bro. S. T. Meneer and P.G. Bro. A. Smith, in recognition of their services to the lodge as secretary and treasurer respectively. An invitation from the secretary of the Workers’ Educational Association (Mr G. Taranaki), are visiting Mr Innes’s parents, Mr and Mrs E. Innes, Williarii street, Akaroa. Mr and Mrs R. C. Narbey (Balguerie street, Akaroa) have returned from a holiday visit to Dunedin. Mr and Mrs W. Robinson (Chertsey) and Miss Nancy Robinson are staying at their house at Green Point, Akaroa. HORORATA Mrs Nicol. of Christchurch, who has been spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs E. Clucas, “Marown,” Hororata, has returned home. Miss Chambers, who has been a visitor to Hororata, has returned to Hawarden. Mr H. BOOKS FROM COUNTRY SERVICE

LIBRARY AT DUNSANDEL The Dunsandel Hall and Library Committee has joined the country library service, and the first books were placed on the shelves during the week. The books are carried round in a book van and placed in rows on shelves, and can be chosen by the library selectors, assisted by the van attendant. • The books are circulated among the subscribers, and at the end of about four months the van will call again and replace the first instalment.
