ELECTION OF NEW COMMITTEES

SCHOOLS IN NORTH CANTERBURY MEETING AT HORORATA An adjourned meeting of householders to elect a school committee was held at Hororata. The following committee was elected: Messrs W. R. Oliver (chairman), R. D. Gray, W. O. Gray, A. L. Parker, and R. W. Orsborne. It was decided to inspect the school grounds with a view to improvements. The asphalt work done by the Public Works Department round the school was reported to have been a great boon in the recent wet weather.

TORMORE SCHOOL The following school committee was c' ted by householders at Tormore:— Chairman, Mr M. C. Hyde; treasurer, Mr C. C. Gray; committee, Messrs C. Rich, A. C. Hyde, W. H. Robinson.

GAME SEASON AT RANGIORA

FEWER LICENCES SOLD THIS YEAR Sportsmen in the Rangiora district report poor results from the game shooting season which will close on June 30. The fine weather during May kept the ducks quiet, though many flocks have been observed at times. Game licences sold are slightly fewer than those of last year.

SOCIAL AT RANGIORA A social organised by the St. John’s Young Men’s Club was held in the parish hall, Rangiora, on Wednesday evening. Music was played by Miss N. Bailey and Messrs J. Hancox and W. Nairn, and extras by Mr G. Mehrtens. Mr Roy Nairn was master of ceremonies.

plunket society MEETING AT SOUTH MALVERN The monthly meeting of the South Malvern Plunket Society was held recently in the Glentunnel Public Hall. Mrs J. Deans presided. Arrangements were made for raising funds for the branch. Mesdamcs G. Chapman and C. Green were hostesses.

GOLF MATCHES AT HORORATA In the qualifying round for the captain’s trophy, played on the Terrace Station course, Hororata, by the Ladies Club, the following players qualified and will play off as placed:—Mrs J. Ballagh and Mrs Hall, Mrs T. H. A. Richards and Mrs H. Hiatt, Mrs E. H. Sime and Mrs W. O. Gray, Mrs R. G. Keith and Mrs T. Stone. The bogey handicap played on the Terrace Station course was won by W. Stone. In the semi-final of the captain’s trophy, W. O. Gray beat P.. G. Keith, and A. D. Oliver beat R. Murray. In the final Oliver and Gray tied, and there will be another play-off.

HORORATA CLUB MEETS Mr T. E. Pearson presided at a meeting of the Hororata Golf Club. It was decided that the club conduct an open tournament in conjunction with the Hills’ trophy in July. Arrangements were made for the tournament. BOOKS FOR LIBRARY AT HORORATA Mr F. N. Wright presided at a meeting of the Hororata Library Committee. The secretary reported on the country library service, which, would enable the libary to obtain 150 books a year. The field librarian had already left 50 books for circulation. FROST OF THIRTEEN DEGREES AT HORORATA A frost of 13 degrees was recorded at Hororata yesterday morning. It was followed by a sunny day. AKAROA BIBLE CLASS MEETING A meeting of St. Peter’s Bible Class and Young People’s Club was held in the Parish Hall, Akaroa, Archdeacon A. J. Petrie conducted Bible study on the divinity of Christ, with group discussion. Physical culture, games, and dancing were held. Misses E. Keegan and O Kingston were accompanists. EUCHRE PARTY AT AKAROA A progressive euchre party was arranged by Mesdames W. A. Newton and W. E. M. Jacobson respective conveners of the Eastern Bays and flower stalls at the forthcoming St. Peter’s Church bazaar. Mrs L. Morrison and Miss Elizabeth Rudden tied for the women’s prize, the former winning in the play-off. Mr W. R. Miles won the men’s prize and Mr and Mrs F. Williamson won the consolation prizes. WORKERS* EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION Mrs A. W. Aitchison was leader at the meeting of the Akaroa branch of the Workers’ Educational Association, held at her home, Aylmer street. Akaroa. The lecture was on the life and works of the Bronte sisters. Charlotte. Emily, and Anne, and extracts were read from “Jane Eyre.” PENINSULA RETURNED SOLDIERS The Peninsula Returned Soldiers’ Association met at Duvauchelle..
