THE WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

KAIAPOI

The annual meeting of the Kaiapoi Women’s Institute was held in the Orange Hall, Kaiapoi. The president, Mrs E. J. Corcoran, presided. The secretary (Mrs B. Pearce) read the annual report. In the competitions for the year, Mrs J. Rennie won ie Flowers Cup and Mrs Partridge won Mrs Corcoran’s Cup for most points on the sales table. The report and balancesheet, the latter showing a credit balance of more than £6, were received and adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, Mrs L. G. Billcliff; secretary, Mrs B. Pearce; treasurer, Mrs G. Hirst; vice-presidents, Mrs L. P. Hopkins and Mrs J. Rennie; committee, Mesdames R. Barnard, J. Taylor, M. Conway, J. C. Simpson, W. J. Tait, E. E. Pollard, R. C. Stewart, Misses N. Stark, and E. Richardson. The Association for Country Education tutor, Miss Fogo, gave an address on “The Home—the index to the condition of the country.” Mrs J. W. Barnard gave a recitation entitled Jubilee Ode, 18501900, and a burlesque, “The Light Housekeeper,” was given by Mesdames J. Rennie, I. J. Richards. R. Barnard, L. P. Hopkins, and Miss E. HAWARDEN The Hawarden Women’s Institute held its annual meeting recently, with Mrs Galletly presiding. The annual reports were adopted, a satisfactory credit balance remaining. The following officers were elected: —President. Mrs J. W. Wright; vicepresidents, Mesdames Lewis and Dalzell; secretary and assistant secretary, Mesdames Hoban and Philpott; treasurer. Mrs D. G. Scott; committee, Mesdames Doak, Galletly. Dalzell. Wright. Shelley, Lewis, Patchett, Scott, Philpott, Webb. Hoban, and Miss J. Croft; delegates to federation meeting in Christchurch, Mrs J, W. Wright and Mrs Hoban; delegates to Wellington,Mesdames Shelley and J. W. Wright; music circle, Mesdames Galletly and Dalzell; drama, Mesdames Patchett and Scott.

The winners of the competitions throughout the year were:—Flowers, Mrs Lewis 1, Mrs Dalzell 2; cooking, Miss E. Croft 1, Mrs Scott 2; fancy, Mrs Heasley 1. Mrs Lewis 2; points for entries, Mesdames Dalzell and Lewis.

WAIPARA The annual meeting of the Waipara Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs B. Symonds presiding. The, challenge cup, given by Mrs McLachlan for the members gaining most points in the competitions, was won by Mrs Darroch. It .was decided to hold the institute meetings on the first Thursday in each month instead of Wednesday. The following officers were elected:—President, Mrs F. Gainsforri; vice-presidents, Mrs B. Symonds, and Mrs A. Conway; secretary, Miss M. Horlor; treasurer, Miss W. Riddell; committee, Mesdames Campbell, McCaskey, G. Williams. Misses D. Cooper, and M. Whyte; delegates to the federation meeting, Mrs Williams and Miss W. Riddell.

MOUNT NESSING

The annual meeting of the Mount Nessing Women’s Institute was held in the hall, with Mrs W. Stevenson presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet were considered satisfactory; As only the required number of members were nominated for committee, the following were elected unopposed:—Mesdames A. B. and R. W. Irving, H. Knubley, I. Macaulay. W. Stevenson, H. G. Waters, and Miss Austin. Mrs R. W. Irving was unanimously re-elected president. It was decided to have a general afternoon tea each month as at present. Competitions for the day resulted as follows:—Knitted tea cosy. Miss Brown 1, Mrs Muir 2. Miss W. Waters 3; nasturtiums. Miss K. Fraser 1. Miss Waters 2, Mrs Muir 3; marble cake, Mrs Muir 1. Mrs Brown 2. Miss Brown 3. Mrs H. H. Fisher gave an interesting and humorous travel talk. Mrs Fisher then presented the yearly prizes as follows:—Mrs R. W. Irving’s cup and institute trophy. Miss P. Brown (63 points) 1, Mrs Muir (60 points) 2 ; Miss Waters (25 points) 3: floral (Mrs R. W. Irving’s prize), Mrs Muir; cookery (Mrs Stevenson’s prize). Miss Brown and Mrs Muir (equal): arts and crafts (Mrs Brown’s prize), Miss Brown; Mrs Water’s prize, Miss K. Fraser. Miss Brown was pianist.

RIMU-WOODSTOCK

The monthly meeting of the RimuWoodstock Women’s Institute was held in the Woodstock Hall, with Mrs Inwood presiding. A vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring president and secretary. New officers were elected as follows; President, Mrs Wells (Kanieri); vice-president, Mrs Lance Rasmussen (Rimu), and secretary, Mrs D. Wells (Woodstock).

The delegate to go to Wellington for the Federation is Mrs Willoughby jun.. and the delegate chosen to go to Greymouth is Mrs Wildbore.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses for the afternoon, Mesdames T. Wells and Willoughby.

LAKESIDE

Mrs Dick presided at the annual meeting of the Lakeside Women’s Institute. Mrs Dick was nominated as delegate to the Dominion conference, to be held in Wellington in July. The election of officers was held, and Mrs Dick was again unanimously elected president, with Mrs R. Lambie secretary, Mrs J. Anderson treasurer, and Mesdames A. E. Amyes, A. E. Brown, G. Barnett, F. Chambers, Miss Graham, Mesdames W. Lambie, W. Patterson,and I. Watson committee. Mesdames F. Chambers and I. Watson were elected vice-presidents and Mrs J. Whisker afternoon tea convener. Most points for the year resulted as follows: Senior. Mrs Dick 1, Mrs Anderson 2; junior. Miss -M. Amyes 1, Mrs D. Chambers 2. An amusing competition was won by Miss Mavis Marshall. .Competitions for the afternoon resulted;— Vase of flowers, seniors, Mrs Dick 1, Mrs Mrs Anderson 3. juniors, M. Aymes 1, N. Manson 2; Victorian posy, seniors, Mrs Dick 1 and 2, Mrs Whisker 3; juniors, D. Chambers and J. Brown (equal) 1, N. Manson 2, M. Amyes 3: egg-shell mosaic, seniors, Mrs F. Chambers 1, Mrs Anderson 2, Mrs G. Nairn 3; juniors, D. Chambers 1; collection of vegetables, Mrs F. Chambers 1, Mrs L. Cooper 2. Mrs Dick 3. Mesdames J. O’Boyle and I. Watson were the judges. Mrs J. O’Boyle, a popular member, who is leaving the district. Was, presented with a small gift. Afternoon , tea was served by Mesdames R. Skilling, J. Whisker, P. Thian. R. Thian, and Miss Schnelle. ■ ,

PIGEON BAY BRANCH

The Pigeon Bay branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held its monthly meeting in the local hall, with Mrs D. N. Waghorn presiding. There was a good attendance of members.

During the afternoon the president presented a handsome leather handbag to Miss Woolcock, who is leaving the district. Arrangements were made for the birthday party to be held on April 1. A donation was sent to headquarters for the community chest fund.

Winners of competitions were:— A sponge sandwich, Mrs J. H. Paterson 1, Miss Lila Duxbury 2; specimen bloom, Mrs George McKay 1, Miss Vera Reynish 2,

Hostesses at the tea hour were Mrs H, Pettigrew and Miss Woolcock.

AROWHENUA

A successful year was reported at the annual meeting of the Arowhenua Women’s Institute, which was held on Monday evening, when Mrs K. Rehu presided. The secretary, Mrs H. Hansen, said that at the beginning of the year there had been 30 members, and at the end there had been 56. The balance-sheet showed a satisfactory position.

Officers for the year were elected as follows:—President, Mrs Rehu; vicepresident, Miss E. Greaves; secretary, Mrs Hansen; treasurer, Mrs B. Solomon; committee, Mesdames Rennie, Waters, O. Hopkinson, T. Beaton, Woodley, and Misses A. Hopkinson and E. Greaves. Mrs Beaton was temporarily appointed as treasurer in place of Mrs Solomon who is ill. Delegates to the federation, Mrs R. Manning and Mrs J. Leonard. The monthly competitions, which were judged by Mrs A. R. Guild and Mrs V. Brookland, resulted: —Specimen bloom, Mrs Arnst 1, Miss Greaves 2, Mesdames Hansen and Mcßae (equal) 3; cake plate, Mrs Downs 1, Mrs Hansen 2, Mrs Arnst 3; hand-knit-ted jumper, Mrs Arnst.l, Miss A, Hopkinson 2, Mrs Williams 3. For the most points in the competitions throughout the year various prizes were presented, and Miss A. Hopkinson was first, with 66 points. Mrs Painter (64> 2. and Mrs Rehu (60) 3.

Presentations were made to Mosdames Hansen and Solomon, who had acted as secretary and treasurer during the year.

LADBROOKS

At the* sixth annual meeting of the Ladbrooks Women’s Institute, Mrs R. A. Hight presided. The annual report was presented by the secretary, Miss Habgood, and the balance-sheet by the treasurer, Mrs M. Gallagher. An excellent financial position was reported. The following were elected to the committee for the ensuing year:— President, Mrs R. J. Ware; committee, Mesdames E. E. Stone. M. Gallagher, H. Colemarfi G. McCarthy, E. Milne, G. Birss, P. Pickering, R. A. Hight, Misses I. M. McKenzie, and RW. Lancaster.

The competitions, which were judged by Miss McKenzie and Miss Lancaster were won by Mrs H. Meyer and Mrs Gallagher (equal) 1, Mrs H. Coleman 2; for tomato sauce and the flower section, P. Pickering 1 and 2. # The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames R. A. Brown and J. Taylor and Miss Margaret Brown. The first committee meeting of the year of the Ladbrooks Women’s Institute was held with Mrs R. J. Ware presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with the former president, Mrs Hight, in her recent bereavement. Mrs G McCarthy was appointed secretary, and Mrs H. Coleman treasurer, with Mrs M. Gallagher and Mrs R. A. Hight vice-presidents. The competition winners for the year were:—General competitions, Mrs M. Gallagher 1, Mrs H. Meyer 2; flower section, Mrs R. J. Ware 1, Mrs P. Pickering 2.

WAIKARI

The annual meeting of the Waikari Women’s Institute was held m the Public Hall recently, with Mrs W.. Parsonage presiding. The election of officers resulted:—President. Mrs H. M. Cocks; vice-presidents, Mrs W. P. Honeybone and Mrs J. B. Page; joint secretaries, Miss A. Trounce and Mrs J. Douglas; treasurer, Mrs R. Tucker; committee, Mesdames M. Codyre, S. L. Boon and L. Hook; delegates to the North Canterbury Federation annual meeting, Mrs Cocks and Miss Trounce; delegate to Dominion Conference. Mrs Hook: delegates to group meetings, president and secretary. Mrs Philpott was nominated as group convener. Prizes were presented for competitions throughout the year as follows; Mrs H. M. Carr’s prize for most points, Mrs D. Mowatt; Mrs H. Phillip’s prize for runner-up, Mrs O. T. James; Mrs W. P. Honeybone’s prizes for most points. Mrs Mowatt 1, Mrs James 2; Mrs Tucker’s prizes for blooms, Mrs L. Rowe 1, Mrs B. L. Blunden 2; Mrs Parsonage’s prize for vegetables, Mrs Rowe 1, Mrs Carr 2; attendance prizes presented by Mrs Page; Mesdames Tucker, J. Hiscocks, Hook, D. Darroch. Page, and Miss A. Trounce.

AKAROA

The first meeting of the year of the Akaroa Women’s Institute Committee was held in the Parish Hall, the newlyelected president (Miss M. Jacobson) presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs E. M. Mayo in her bereavement, and with Mesdames G. A. Hammond, W. A. Newton, and W. Gorman, who are patients in the Akaroa Hospital. An invitation was received from the Pigeon Bay Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union to its annual birthday party on April 1. Remits to be considered at the Dominion conference in Wellington in July were discussed.

HAWARDEN

The sixth annual meeting of the Hawarden Women’s Institute was held recently, Mrs Galletly presiding over a fair attendance. Trophies won by members during the year were presented to the following:—Cooking, Miss E. Croft 1, Mrs D. Scott 2. Flowers, Mrs Lewis 1, Mrs Dalzell 2. Fancy work: Mrs Heasley 1, Mrs Lewis 2. Special prizes for most entries were won by Mrs Lewis and Mrs Dalscell.

The following officers were elected: President, Mrs J. W, Wright; vice-pre-sidents, Mrs W. D. Dalzell (senior) and Mrs Lewis (junior); secretary, Mrs Hoban; assistant-secretary, Mrs Philpott; treasurer, Mrs Scott; committee, Mesdames Doak, Galletly, Philpott, Shelley, Scott, Dalzell, Webb, Lewis, Patchett, Hoban, and Wright, and Miss J. Croft; competitions, Miss J. Croft; visitors’ book, Mrs Webb; drama, Mesdames Patchett and Scott; pattern box, Mrs Dalzell; musical circle, Mesdames Galletly and Dalzell; cookery book, Mrs Forbes; garden circle, Mrs Doak; reporter, Mrs Shelley; auditor, Mr Rydings. The president and secretary were appointed delegates to the half-yearly meeting in Christchurch. It was also decided to send a delegate to the Dominion conference in Wellington. BURNHAM

At the annual meeting of the Burnham Women’s Institute, Mrs Nicol presided.! The secretary read a report on the year’s work, and the balancesheet showed a satisfactory credit. The roll call, meanings of flowers, proved interesting. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mrs C. Storie; vice-president, Mrs P. Austin; secretary and treasurer, Miss A. Wright; committee, Mesdames Nicholas, N. Chamberlain,, Misses J. Scott, D. Bell, M. Chamberlain, D. Popple. The results of the competitions were as follows: Small bloom, Mrs A. W. Scott 1, Mrs P.
