WOMEN’S DIVISION

WAIMAIRI-PAPANUI BRANCH

The monthly meeting of the Wai-mairi-Papanui brar.ch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Papauui social room, with Mrs Thomson presiding. Two new members were eiirolled. Mrs Radford gave members hints on cooking for competitions and some good recipes. A pianoforte solo was played by Mrs Philpot. Results of dower competitions were. —Vase of flowers, Mrs Greenslade 1, Mrs Reynolds 2. Mrs Greig 3; single bloom. Mrs Preston 1, Mrs Moncrief 2; bowl of flowers, Mrs Reynolds 1, Mrs Greig 2; a garden on a dinner plate, Mrs Greenslade 1, Mrs Burrows 2; posy bowl, Mrs Moncrief 1, Mrs Wood 2. Mrs Adams and her group were hostesses at the tea hour.

broadfield branch

The monthly meeting of the Broadfield branch of the Women s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in me Broadfield schoolroom, with Mrs W. Wallace presiding. Mrs Simmonds (Motukarara) gave a short talk on some of the aims of the division. An interesting talk was also given by Mrs Smith on the growing, drying, and packing of sultanas. It was decided to hold a Harvest Home” dance next month. Results of the competitions which were judged by Mesdames Simmonds and Smith were:—Prettiest cake plate (juniors): Miss P. Wallace 1, Miss L. Smith 2. Seniors: Miss G.. Wallace 1. Miss M. Wallace 2, Miss A. Smith 3. Floating bowl of flowers (juniors): Miss P. Wallace 1. Seniors: Mrs C. Early 1, Mrs J, Reid 2, Miss G. Wallace 3. “ Hostesses at the tea hour were Mesdames C. Early, C. Ryan, and E. Guilford.

BELFAST BRANCH

The monthly meeting of the Belfast branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Library, with Mrs T. Morton presiding. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr D. C. McArthur in his recent bereavement. Mrs E. Treleaven (Marshland) gave a demonstration of the making of unboiled sweets. It was announced that members of the Ouruhia, Marshland, Styx, Harewood, and Belfast branches had been invited to inspect the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills on April 7. A competition for the best bloom was won by Miss Myra Morton, with Miss M. Crawfofd and Mrs P. Taylor (equal) second.

DIAMOND HARBOUR-PURAU

The monthly meeting of the Diamond Harbour-Purau branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held at Godley House, with Mrs Paine (vice-president) presiding. It was decided that two members should represent the branch at the provincial meeting to be held at Ashburton, and several members agreed to attend a group meeting at Motukarara in April.

- Mrs R. T. Tosswill gave an interesting account of her recent visit to the East.

Winners of the monthly competitions were:—Embroidered traycloth; Mrs Manson 1, Miss D. Gardiner 2. Best floral arrangement; Mrs Manson and Miss M. Sutton (equal) 1, Miss Isherwood 2. Best bloom: Mrs Miller 1. Miss D. Gardiner 2. The silver cup for most points was won by Mrs Manson Hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs J. Hunter and Misses Warnock and Haz§l Hunter.

OXFORD BRANCH

A special meeting of the Oxford branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was held on Tuesday. The president. Mrs P. K. Thompson, presided. It was reported that Mrs Drake, the Dominion president, would visit Rangiora on April 8. Groups were formed for special lectures from the Association for Country Education during the year. Arrangements were made for the annual sales day tea. to be held on April 21. Mr H. C. D. Somerset spoke on “Child Nutrition.” The hostesses were Mesdames T. Mehrtens, W. B. Reed, T. J. Smith, P. K. Thompson, and R. C. Thompson.

MARSHLAND BRANCH

The monthly meeting of the Marshland branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held on Wednesday. Mrs Marks presided. Mrs Carpenter (Fernside) gave an interesting talk on her recent trip to England and the Continent. Arrangements were made for a combined outing to Kaiapoi with the Belfast branch early in April. Final arrangements were made for the drama festival to be held at Papanui on March 24.

The competitions resulted as follows: —Bloom, Mrs Jarman and Mrs Nigel Treleaven (equal) 1, Mrs Cooper and Miss P. Kiesanowski (equal) 2; silk nightdress (senior), Mrs E. Treleaven, Mrs Grattan; (junior) Miss RhOna Wilson, Miss P. Kiesanowski; chocolate cake, Mrs McFadden 1, Mrs S. Watson 2; (junior) Miss P. Kiesanowski.

Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, • Mesdames Jarman, Hall, Stewart, Blackburn, J. Erickson, and Miss Sharlick.

HAREWOOD JUNIOR BRANCH

Miss M. McConnel presided at the monthly meeting of the Harewood junior branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union. Mrs Taylor, who gave an interesting demonstration on flower decorations, judged the competitions for flowers and pikelets. The results were:—Flowers: Miss M. McConnel 1. Miss M. Anderson 2. Pikelets: Miss M. McConnel 1, . Miss Anderson and Miss Hardy (equal) 2. The competition for the next meeting will be a plate of plain toffee.
