DISTANCE BETWEEN HURDLES

NO ALTERATION THIS YEAR ’ (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) *e» WELLINGTON, March L Numerous matters relating to th« New Zealand championships to be held at Christchurch on March 11 were discussed at this evening’s meeting of the Council of the New- Zealand Amateur Athletic Association. Mr R. W. McViliy presided. Mr McViliy was appointed referee for the championships, and the Canterbury nominations of Messrs J.'sWStubberfleld, J. G. D. Ward r . and|RTwyheham as waUdng judges, were approved. The secretary, Mr H, McCormack, questioned the advisability of holding special such as the six nates and-dertain women’s events, the-’ob-jects of which had been to afford a guide for the Empire Games. It was decided to advise the Canterbury centre to delete these events, and to carry on with the ordinary programme. The Canterbury centre sought a ruling as to what province W. J. Fitzsimmons, formerly of Hawke’s Bay, was to represent at the championships. Since December he had been a. resident of Christchurch. The secretary said that the rule stipulated that an athlete could xei£ resent a centre which applied for such representation. Hawke’s Bay plied for Fitzsimmons. Canterbury had asked for a ruling, and it was decided to advise that Hawke’s Bay’s application be accepted. . . During a discussion on the remits to be discussed at the New Zealand conference, Mr J. A. Gassou pointed out that the distances between hurdles in New Zealand were not according to international rules. Was it intended to make any alteration for tbe_ championships? Mr McCormick said that the distances in the 440 hurdles event in the Empire Games at Sydney were according to international rules. This had caused A. T. Anderson (New Zealand) to alter the whole style of his pacing. He had dore very well m the changed conditions. The chairman said it appeared that the distances ir New Zealand would have to be brought into line with the international rules, but it was too late to make any alteration for this season. It was decided to adhere to the New Zealand rules for the championships at Christchurch. It was decided to recommend the Canterbury centre to have moving pictures taken of all the finishes at the New Zealand championships.
