WARM WEATHER IN CITY
Second Hottest Day This Summer
HIGH TEMPERATURES IN
OTHER DISTRICTS
The exceptionally warm weather in Christchurch yesterday was general throughout the province. At 12.30 p.m. in the city the temperature was 87.9 degrees in the shade, the second hottest this summer.
At Hinds, 10 miles south of Ashburton, the temperature at 4 o'clock in the afternoon was reported to be 92 degrees in the shade. Temperatures ranging from 80 to 86 degrees were recorded at Timaru, Waimate, Temuka, Geraldine, Ashburton, and Rangiora. At 9.30 a.m. in the city the temperature was 82 degrees. The wind was then light from the nor'-west, but towards noon it increased. Throughout the afternoon the heat continued. Although many sought coolness at the beaches the exodus from the city was small compared with what it would have been had the day been a holiday. Popular places yesterday were the banks of the Avon, the Botanic 'Gardens, and the area surrounding the Bowker Fountain. Until after 9.30 last evening, when the temperature had fallen to 82 degrees, all the seats in the area surrounding the fountain were occupied. The hottest day in Christchurch this summer was on December 24 when 91 degrees were registered by the Magnetic Observatory's instruments.
