INCREASED DRINKING AMONG MAORIS

Bishop Blames Shorter Working Hours

(mess association telegram.)

HASTINGS, February 25,

The 40-hour week and the legislation which has created more leisure time were blamed by the Bishop of Aotea-roa (the Rt. Rev. F. A. Bennett) for the increase of excessive drinking among Maoris. "A thing which ought to be a boon to the Maoris has become a curse," the Bishop said in an interview. "The effect of the extra amount of leisure on the drinking habits of the Maori people has been very serious. The native people themselves are realising the harm that drink is doing to the race and many leaders and chiefs are disturbed about it and anxious for the future. The trouble is that Maoris are gravitating to bars and spending the whole day in bars. In many cases they are squandering money which should go to support their wives and children."
