AKAROA HIGH SCHOOL
INCREASED ATTENDANCE REPORTED MEETING OF COMMITTEE Congratulations to the staff of ihe Akaroa District High School on ;hc splendid results of the recent examinations were extended at the conmittec meeting, wnen the chairman (Mr F. G. Armstrong) presided. Also present were Messrs T. E. McKencic (honorary secretary), A. M. Helps. W A. Newton, and E. Glynan (Takamatua). The three pupils who had entered for the university entrance examination had all passed and two for the training college examination wore accepted and would start on February 14. The headmaster (Mr J. E. Maxwell* reported that the primary school had opened with an attendance of 80 pupils and the secondary department with 38 Seven new pupils had been enrolled in the primary department and 20 in the secondary. It wa* expected that the primary roll number would be 90, and the secondary 44. Miss Pollock 'infant mistress) and Miss Goldfinch (supernumerary assistant) had begun their duties. Air Maxwell also reported tnat stemming instruction would be given during this term, as it was Intended to hold swimming sports. The school had also joined up with the travelling library scheme, which was proving most satisfactory, at a minimum of cost. As a way of marking Akaroa’s centennial, it was decided to ask the Public Works Department to have the school grounds put in good order. It was decided to take no action in the matter of establishing a dental clinic at Akaroa. Casual work was found for two men this week under the placement scheme. GOOD FISHING AT K AIK ODRA Three Kaikoura residents, who were out fishing a few days ago, made a iccord catch of 267 butterfish in about two hours by pole netting. LOYAL GOOD INTENT LODGE AT AKAROA Bro. A. J. Smith, N.G.. presided over a good attendance at the meeting of the Loyal Good Intent Lodge Several members claimed degrees, which will be conferred at the next meeting. A social evening was held.

MEETING OF SOUTHBRIDGE SOCIETY The experiment made last year in changing from a summer to an autumn show had proved satisfactory, it was stated in the report presented at the annual meeting of the Southbridge Horticultural Society, over which Mr A. McPherson presided. There was, however, a debit of £lO 2s 9d on the year’s working, though this would be reduced by subscriptions and other amounts still to be collected. PLUNKET SOCIETY
MEETING AT ELLESMERE
Members handed in their collection boxes for the Karitane Hospital extension fund at a meeting of the Ellesmere branch of the Plunket Society, over which Mrs J. Coe presided. The boxes will be sent unopened to Christchurch. The meeting expressed thanks to the Ellesmere County Council and the Southbridge and Leeston Town Boards for donations. It was left to the president to make inquiries for a supply of poppies for the Poppy Day appeal. Sympathy was extended to Mrs S. Johnston and the Nidd family in their bereavements, and to Mesdames Harte and Lochhead, who were indisposed.
