GIFT TO AUCKLAND CITY

* WILL OF SIR ALGERNON THOMAS IPRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, February 2. The estate of Sir Algernon Thomas, K.C.M.G., formerly emeritus professor of the Auckland University College, was valued for probate purposes at £40,000. To carry out the wish expressed by Sir Thomas, members of the family are presenting as gifts to the Auckland city the historic Lion Rock and 100 acres of native bush at Piha on the west coast, about 30 miles from Auckland. The Lion Rock is a high, rugged landmark on one of the favourite west coast beaches, and is surrounded by water at high tide. It is proposed that a portion of the park be used as a camping ground for organised parties of young people from Auckland.
