ACCOMMODATION IN HOTELS
* IMPROVEMENT URGED The provision in New Zealand hotels of more up-to-date accommodation, so that tourists’ needs could be met, was urged yesterday by Mr L. J. Schmitt, general manager of the Tourist Department, who is visiting Christchurch. Mr Schmitt said that the tourist season had been very good indeed. “It will be necessary in the near future for hotel proprietors to increase the amount of modern accommodation available,” said Mr Schmitt. “By that I mean the provision of bathrooms associated with bedrooms, and of other up-to-date service. “While I realise that they have already made extensions, I reiterate what I said some time ago—that the work being done overseas by the Department of Tourists and Publicity is reaping a harvest which we in New Zealand are finding it difficult to provide for. Some of the tourists who come to New Zealand from the United States, Canada, and Great Britain expect better accommodation. They want something more closely equal to that provided in their own country.”
