■■ ■■ w SOUTHLAND NOMINEE FOR EMPIRE GAMES FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD GIRL FOR WOMEN’S BACKSTROKE (SBESa ASSOCIATION TBLBOBBX.) INVERCARGILL, December 8. The Southland Swimming Centre decided this evening to nominate Joyce Macdonald as a member of the Empire Games team. Miss Macdonald, who is 15 years old, is the present holder of all the Southland intermediate girls’ freestyle and backstroke titles, and holds the New Zealand intermediate girls’ backstroke record. She has been nominated for the women’s backstroke. N.Z. WOMEN’S RECORDS BROKEN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCES AT OTAGO MEETING (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGBAM.) DUNEDIN, December 8. Two New Zealand records were lowered at the Otago swimming championships this evening, and two fresh provincial records were established. In the 220 yards women’s breaststroke Miss W. Dunn covered the distance in 3min 23 3-ssec, clipping a second off the record established in 1934 by Miss J. Webster (Auckland). The other outstanding performance was that of Miss E. Goldthorpe, who broke the record of 40 l-ssec for the 50 yards junior girls’ backstroke by a second. Her time for the distance is the same as that put up by Miss Westaby, who also lowered the record at Invercargill recently.
