SIDELIGHT ON REARMAMENT PROGRAMME (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, September 8, The chairman of the general purpose committee reported to the Trade Union Congress that the Amalgamated Engineering Union had withdrawn its amendment to the memorandum issued by the General Council of Labour last week. This is generally regarded as supporting a rearmament programme. The Engineering Union amendment was in condemnation of the programme, and its withdrawal leaves the congress free to have a straight debate on the General Council’s policy. ALTERATIONS AT KING’S CROSS STATION
(BRITISH OFFICIAL WIRELESS.) RUGBY, September 8. Big changes are being made in the underground stations and com nexions at King’s Cross station, which is used by 40,000,000 persons a year. There will be 10 entrances to the combined station at various points round the roadway junction in front of the London and North-eastern station, and the resulting subways will make a valuable contribution to the safety of pedestrians. The reconstruction will eventually provide for a better connexion between the metropolitan and country-line trains, which at present end at Baker street station, with the inner circle and city trains. NEW ZEALANDER’S PAINTING OF GALLIPOLI (Received September 9, 5.5 p.m.) ADELAIDE, September 9. The original painting of “SirApson and the Donkey,” a Gallipoli -scene, by the New Zealand artist, Sapper Moore Jones, has been bought for the South Australian Government.
