RECENT SOCIAL GATHERINGS

"KITCHEN" GIFT PARTY

A "kitchen" gift party, organised by Mis T. E. Pearson, was held in trie noroiata Hall, vo nonour Miss Jeannie chapman, wnose marriage will take place snortiy. Competitions were won by Miss Thorne and Mrs Lawrence. Before serving afternoon tea. Mrs T. E. s~n asked Miss Chapman to accept many useful gifts for the kitchen of her new home.

Miss Chapman was also entertained by Mr and Mrs C. Lawrence, at a "pantry" gilt party held at their home at Hororata. A pleasant time was spent in games, community singing, dancing, and competitions, the latter being won by Misses D. McKenzie, D. Wilkie (Christchurch). N. Adkins, and Mr Kendall.

EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE

A successful euchre party and dance were held in the East Eyreton Hall in cid of the hall funds. Six-night aggregate prizes were won by Mrs J. Paget and Mr G. Cherry, and euchre prizes were won by Miss E. Merrin. Mrs S. Mclllrick, Messrs G. H. Hassall and J. Paget. Consolation prizes were awarded to Mrs W. Robson and Mr M. Pearce.

Mr F. Miller played the dance music, and Mr C. Giles acted as master of ceremonies.

A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr and Mrs S. Mclllrick.

Amongst those present were Mesdames T. Giles, A. Proudlock, M. Piper. W. Robson. J. Paget, R. Cherry, W. Martin, R. Smith, S. Mclllrick, Misses E. and A. Merrin, M. R'ce, P. Giles. O. Eaynon, C. Martin, N. Hassall, J. Higginscn, A. Higginson, I. Orme, and G. Vette.

EVENING SOCIAL

An evening social arranged by members of the Women's Social Committee to raise funds for All Saints' Church, Prebbleton, was held in the Parish Hall, Prebbleton.

Prizes for card games were won by Mrs T. Hardipg, Mrs C. Hands, Mr C. Hands, and Mr J. Anderson.

Other prize-winners were Mrs J Anderson and Mr T. Smith.

Those present were Mr and Mrs H. Webb, Mr and Mrs C. Hands, Mr and Mrs T. Smith, Mr and Mrs T. Harding, Mesdames H. Brooks, S. Greenslade, W. Hands. G. Rutherford, J. McClintock, J. Anderson, H. INSTITUTE'S PARTY

The fifth birthday party of the Ladbrooks Women's Institute was held in the Ladbrooks Hall. The past-presi-dent (Mrs R. J. Ware) welcomed the guests present, who included m'mbers of the Lincoln, Springston, Hornby, and Tcmpleton institutes, and representatives of the Tai Tapu Women's Division of the Farmers' Union.

A concert programme was prrsentei by members and friends and the school children. Mesdames M. Gallagher, H. Coleman, and T. Foster arranged . the programme and trained the children. In the past-president's address best wishes were express"d for the spe'dy recovery of Mrs Hight's small son in his serious illness.

After supper the birthday cake which had heen made by Mrs J. McCarthy and icef by Mrs H. B Meyer, was cut by Mrs Ware. Mrs M Gallagher, Mrs J. H. Meyer. Mrs H. B. *Teycr (vice-prrs'dn*s). Miss Molly Nolan (secretary), and M ss Lorna Larrombe (treasurer),' each lit a candle

Birthday greetings were received from Mrs B. L. Blunden, president of the North Canterbury Federation of Women's Institutes, and visiting members of institutes and women's divisions of the farmers' union. Mrs Ware was presented with a bouquet, and shoulder sprays were presented to Miss Molly Nolan (secretary) and M : ss Lorna Larcombe (treasurer).

Prizes for most points in competitions during the year were won by Mrs M. Gallagher, Mrs P. Pickering, and Mrs R. J. Ware. '

After the concert programme, dancing was enjoyed, music being supnl'ed by Mr J. Stewart and Mr F. Roesler.

CATHOLIC BALL

The second annual Catholic ball was held in the Town Hall, Little R'ver, and although the weather was unfavourable, there was an exceptionally large attendance, visitors being present from all parts of Banks Peninsula ind Christchurch.

Great c-r Hit is due to the s«"">etary, Mr A. Dawber, and hi? energetic committee, for the way the arrangements were carried out.

Music was supplied by G. Holland's orchestra, and extras by Mrs L. Radford. Mr A. Dawber was master of cerpmonies.

To add to the enjoyment of the "uests, novelty dancrs were held, and Mr A. Keen (Christchurch) gave humorous monologues. The winners of novHy dances were Miss Lois Austin and Mr T. Lee, Miss E. Glynan and Mr B Foley, and Miss F. Davis and Mr E. Haley.
