OBITUARY
MR H. P. WASHBOURN
(PItESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) NELSON, January 28. The death has occurred of Mr H. P. Washbourn, aged 91. Mr Washbourn spent almost the whole of his life in the Nelson district, where he was very widely respected. He was engaged mainly in mining development in the Golden Bay district, and made a special study of geology. He contributed greatly to the knowledge of the mineral resources of the district. Dr. H. E. A. Washbourn (Nelson), and Mr F. Washbourn (Timaru) are sons. His wife and youngest son, Dr. H. O. Washbourn (Richmond) died before him.
SIR HALLEY STEWART

LONDON, January 27. The death is announced of Sir Halley Stewart, at the age of 99.
Sir Halley, a man of business, a politician and a philanthropist, was born in 1838 at Barnet, near London, where his father, the Rev. Alexander Stewart, was a Congregational minister. He inherited his father's relU gious views, but chose a business career, eventually becoming a partner in the firm of Stewart Bros, and Spencer, of Rochester. He,was also chairman of B. J. Forder and Son, brickmakers, and a director of the British Portland Cement Manufacturers, Ltd. Describing himself as an advanced Liberal, he tried unsuccess T fully to enter Parliament in 1885 and 1886. but in 1887 he was elected for the 'Spalding Division of Lincolnshire. Losing his seat in 1895, he. was out of the House of Commons until 1906, when he was returned for Greenock, and remained a member until 1910. Meanwhile he had .been a liberal benefactor to institutions and movements for the benefit of the hard-working poor. In 1925 Sir Halley founded the Halley Stewart Trust Fund to advance religion and education and relieve poverty. In January, 1932. he was knighted in recognition of his benefactions and social and public services.
