ACCIDENTS

AEROPLANE DIVES INTO SEA PILOT RESCUED BY FATHER (press association telegram.) AUCKLAND, January 13. While circling over his lather’s launch at Waiheke Island this morning, an Auckland airman, Harold Wiles, aged 25, suddenly lest control of the Gypsy Moth machine, which dived into the sea. He was rescued by his lather and two brothers in the launch and brought to an Auckland private' hospital. His condition is not serious. Wiles, who is a member of the Royal Air Force, had come to bid farewell to the family, which was leaving on a launch cruise. When rescued from the machine he was slowly sinking in 40 feet of water. He was conscious, with cuts about the head and face. A witness said that the Moth dived from 100 feet. Before leaving the aerodrome, the machine, which is owned by the Auckland Aero Club, was tried out and pronounced airworthy. CHILD’S SUDDEN DEATH SWALLOWED PIECE OF CORK (PRESS ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) PALMERSTON N., January 13. Davis Harold Scott, the 15-months-old son of Mr and Mrs T. D. Scott, of Manga whata, died suddenly after showing signs of choking. At the Inquest the father gave evidence that the child had been playing with a lemonade bottle. He had bitten part of the cork out of the neck of the bottle and swallowed, it. The father succeeded in getting a finger behind part of the cork, but failed to dislodge it. A doctor was summoned, but he was too late to assist, the child being dead. The inquest was adjourned.
