♦ — MONDAY (Before Mr E. C. Lewey, S.M.) WOMAN REMANDED Charged with using obscene langt* age and being in a state of helplesl drunkenness in St. Asaph street, Phillipa Hanna (Mr D. J. Hewitt), a domestic aged 49, was remanded for medical" observation until January 4. SubInspector D. A. Mac Lean said that the accused was suffering from the effect! of drunkenness. CONVERSION OF CAR Vivian Harvey Were, a mechanic aged 22, of Ham road, and another maa whose name was suppressed, were charged with unlawfully converting a car valued at £260, the property <i Albert Leslie Large, to their own use. They were represented by Mr D. J. Hewitt Were pleaded guilty and the other accused not guilty. Chief-Detective Dunlop said that Were borrowed a license and then rented a car from the complainantHe did not return it at the required time and was later caught near Oamaru. The other man turned out now to be an innocent party whose car had broken down and who had accepted a ride with Were. Were was remanded for sentence. Bail of £IOO was allowed with one surety of £IOO, and a condition that he reports daily to the police. The charge against the other mai was dismissed. BOOKMAKING CHARGE Archibald Caldwell Brown, a blacksmith, of Peterborough street, pleaded guilty to a charge of carrying on business as a bookmaker on December 26 at Hurunui. Chief -Defective Dunlop said that Brown apparently went to the race meeting at Hurunui expecting to find a totalisator there. Others also expected to be able to bet and it was arranged that he should act as a bookmaker for them. He went there with £7 and came away with twopence in his pocket and owing £ls. He was noticed by Acting-Detective Stewart taking several bets. Brown was fined £2 and ordered to pay costs, in default 14 days' imprison* ment.
