I SEFTOX I Ts A. Ashworth presided over the monthly meeting of the Sefton-Kowai Women’s Institute. Sympathy was expressed with two sick members in hospital. One new member was elected. A demonstration on fancy work styles and stitches was given by Miss McGuire. of Christchurch. A report on the half-yearly conference, prepared by Mrs R. Taylor, was read by Mrs F. McGowan. Competition winners were; Best bloom: Mrs Chambers 1, Mrs J. Rowe 2. Miss Jamieson 3. Article in cross stitch: Miss Jamieson 1, Mrs R. McGowan 2. Plate of daintiest white bread and butter: Mrs G. Taylor 1, Mrs C. Petrie 2, Miss B. Douds 3. Hostesses were Mesdames Rowe, Chambers. Mills, and Maguire. COALGATE Mrs Johnston presided at the monthly meeting of the Coalgate Women's Institute. A resolution of sympathy was passed with Mrs B. C, Rutherford, who is a patient in the Lewisham Hospital. All members agreed to help the health camp campaign. Final arrangements were made for the Christmas breakup on December 22. The result of the competitions was as follows: —Tinfoil work. Mrs P. Prestidge 1, Mrs Jenkins 2. Premier bloom: Mrs S. W. Beatty 1, Mrs G. Pearce 2, Mrs P. Prestidge 3. Mrs Calwell’s resignation as secretary of the institute since its inception two and a half years ago, was accepted with regret. SPOTSWOOD Mrs A. W. Leaman, president, presided at the monthly meeting of the Spotswood Women’s Institute. An invitation to the Parnassus Women’s Institute was accepted. The month’s competitions were;— Cotton frock, costing not more than 7s fid, Mrs B. N. Buttle I, Mrs N. W. Fraser 2. Rose bloom: Mrs T. Stevenson 1, Mrs A. W. Leaman 2. Mrs A. C. Barnes gave an interesting talk, the subject being “Mrs Alfred Watt." Mrs T. Stevenson was in charge of the sales table in aid of the children’s party, and Miss R. Craighead was in charge of a stall of goods from the Disabled Soldiers’ Handcrafts. Mrs P. Fitzgibbon, Mrs N. W. Fraser, Miss G. Fitzgibbon, and Miss I. Upton were hostesses, and the competition was won by Miss D. Wilkinson.
