WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

AKAROA branch

The president. Miss E. Le Lievre, presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly general meeting of the Akaroa Women’s Institute. The Mayoress, Mrs F. R. E. Davis, wrote asking for assistance at the shop to be held on November 21, in aid of the Akaroa Silver Band. The names of volunteers were given and goods asked for. It was decided to have the December meeting in the form of a garden party at Miss Jacobson’s garden. Mount Leinster, and also to have a bring and buy stall in aid of institute funds. Mrs Fantham was co-opted to the committee. Mrs F. C. Newton, honorary secretary, reported upon the costs of the branch, and it was decided to have it worked. It was decided that the institute join the crippled children’s association. Mrs C. Petterson and Miss G. Seymour were in charge of the social afternoon and two competitions were held. “Origin of things used in the kitchen” was won by Mrs C. C. Narbey, and the “missing word” by Miss D. Leete. The afternoon’s competitions showed many fine exhibits. The following were the results: —Embroidered apron: Mrs P. G. Riches 1, Miss E. Le Lievre 2, Mrs Hugh Le Lievre 3. Best bloom: Miss E. Jacobson 1. Miss E. Le Lievre 2, Mrs W. J. Edginton 3. Fruit dish: Mrs F. Brocherie 1. ’ Mesdames S. C. Curry, R. Bruce. F. Brocherie, and C. A. Fantham were the hostesses for the afternoon.

GRAIN’S BAY BRANCH

The monthly meeting of the Okain’s Bay Women’s Institute was held, with Mrs Bain presiding. Mrs Mora, a new member, was welcomed. Arrangements for the children’s party to be held on Christmas Eve were discussed. A telegram competition was won by Mrs Mora. Competitions during the afternoon resulted: —Jar of flowers: Mrs L. Graham 1, Miss N. Moore 2. Christmas gift, cost not to exceed 2s: Mrs A. Bain 1, Miss N. Moore 2. The hostesses were Mesdames P. Moore, E. Moore, and Miss N. Moore.

CHARWELL FORKS-LYNTON DOWNS

The monthly meeting <jf the Charwell Forks-Lynton Downs branch of the Women’s Institute was held, with Mrs J. E. Barker (president) presiding. A pleasant afternoon was spent, interspersed with several games of tennis. 1

The competition was won by Mrs R. Hamilton and Mrs Archer (Christchurch) . A number of articles from the Disabled Soldiers’ Association found a ready sale. Hostesses were Mesdames I. McGregor, A. C. Scott, and Miss G; McGregor.
