DECISION TO HOLD SHOW
BULLER A. AND P. ASSOCIATION The agricultural and pastoral show will be held at Westport this year in accordance with a decision made at the adjourned annual meeting of the Buller Agricultural and Pastoral Association held in the secretary’s office on Friday evening. Present were Messrs H. V. Palmer (chairman), T. Carter, C. Lemon, J. Hateley, J. Beaton, P. Keating, W. Stowell, M. Durkin. P. Mikkleson, S. Low, G. D. Campbell, J, Riske, C. W. Garvey, A. Vincent, and the secretary (Mr J. Radford).
The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr J. P. Burley; president, Mr M. Durkin: vice-presidents, Messrs P. Roselli and W. H. Martin, sen.; auditors, Messrs P. Struthers and F. Clarke; treasurer, Mr E. Skilton; hon. veterinary surgeon, Mr B. Patten; secretary, Mr J. WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the Westland County Council was held with Cr. J. J. McKay presiding. Advice was received that the Mam Highways Board would visit Hokitika on November 24 to receive representations. , . .... Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., advised that he had interviewed the PostmasterGeneral about a second mail each week to ths south. It was decided to forward Mr W. D. Nolan’s objection to the leasing of the cattle-resting reserve at Okuru, to the Land Board. A request for road access to a property in Upper Arahura was received. The owner said he had given an option over timber on his property, and would be prepared to grant £IOO toward the cost of a road and the timber company would grant £75. The clerk estimated the cost at £I7OO, and said the council was already committed to an expenditure of £125. It was agreed to increase this amount to £225. ai d to ask the Government for £IOOO. A letter was received from the Hokitika branch of the Labour party outlining arrangements that had been made to organise a presentation to Mr J. O’Brien, M.P., in recognition of his services to the district. A motion to grant £lO 10s to the fund was carried unanimously, and the chairman, Cr. J. and Cr. Jamieson were appointed to represent the council officially at the presentation. CRICKET ■■ SOUTHERN SUB-ASSOCIATION Mr F. McCabe presided at the weekly meeting of the Southern Cricket Sub-Association. It was decided to begin the Saturday competition to-day and endeavour to obtain other teams to enter. School was drawn to play Hokitika at the Mental Hospital grounds, Woodstock having the bye. Messrs J. Coulson, C. Morgan, and J. Howat were appointed senior selectors for the season. Messrs D. Spence, J. Coulson, and Growcott were appointed a postponement committee. The following fixtures were approved for the week-end:—Hokitika B v. Ross, at Ross; Rimu v. Woodstock, at Woodstock; Hokitika A v. Ruatapu, at Hokitika; Kanieri, a bye. WESTPORT PERSONALS Dr. Hogg, of Invercargill, is visiting Westport on behalf of the British Medical Association to confer with local medical men about the proposed national health insurance scheme. The Hon. W. H, Mclntyre, M.L.C.. and Mr J. H. Harkness, will leave for Nelson to-day to attend the monthly meeting of the Nelson Education Board on Monday. CRICKET FIXTURES IN WESTPORT The Buller Cricket Association fixtures for to-day are as follows:—Tiroroa v. Technical School, at Tlroroa; St. Canice’s v. Rovers, at St. Canice’s; Hone Heke v. United, at Denniston; Birchfield v. Hector, at Birchfleld. DEATH OF RESIDENT OF MILLERTON The funeral will take place at the Orawaiti cemetery to-day of Mrs W. Watson, sen., an old and very wellknown resident of Mlllerton, whose death occurred suddenly on Wednesday night. Mrs Watson, who was 67 years of age, was bom in Scotland, and had lived in Millerton for the last 23 years. Mrs Watson is survived by her husband, i r sons—Messrs W., A., J., and T. Watson, all of Granity—and seven daughters—Mrs Grant (Wellington), Mrs Blyth (Taumarunui), Mrs Hart (Wellington), Mrs Lewis (Sergeant's Hill), Mrs Mulgrove (Millerton), and Misses Ethel and Kathleen Watson (Millerton). REEFTON CROQUET CLUB’S OPENING In showery weather on Wednesday afternoon the Reefton Croquet Club declared the season open for 1936. Mrs Stallard opened the green and wished players a successful and happy season. There was a good attendance and a number of players from the Makura Club in Greymouth attended the gathering. Competitions during the afternoon were won by Mesdames Hickton, Whlbley, McMillan, Buist, and Stallard. The commencement ef rain stopped the games, but an enjoyable afternoon was spent by all. The committee served afternoon tea.
