SEASON DELAYED BY WET WEATHER THIRD ATTEMPT TO COMMENCE CRICKET COMPETITION The summer sports season at Greymouth has been delayed very much this year by the rain at week-ends. The Saturday cricket competition will make its third attempt to begin today, and the United Tennis Club, which has postponed its opening, will also endeavour to open its season. The opening of the Greymouth Regatta Club is to be held to-morrow, when the president of the club. Mr J. Walton, will declare the season open. After the opening a race will be held over the club course. In the Sunday cricket competition, which will be continued to-morrow, United has seven points, Cobden has one point and one match to play, Marist B has three points, Marist A Has three points and one match to play, and Runanga has no points and two matches to play. This competition has been disorganised to a certain extent by a shortage of grounds, as the Runanga pitch has not been ready 'lor use, but it may be ready this weekend.

The draw for to-morrow’s games is: United v. Xdarist B, at Recreation Ground;. Cobden v. Marist A at Cobden; Runanga has the bye. For to-day’s matches the draw is:— Senior grade: United v. Technical Old Boys, at Recreation Ground No. 1; Cobden v. Runanga at Runanga, if the ground is available. Marist has the bye. Junior grade: United A v. Technical A at Recreation Ground No. 2; United B v. Technical B at Karoro; Marist v Cobden. at Cobden. GREYMOUTH REGATTA CLUB PROSPECTS FOR GOOD SEASON The Greymouth Regatta Club will open its third and. from the number of new members and new boats, probably most successful season to-morrow. It is expected that the club will have about 90 members this year and there Will be nearly 20 yachts on the club’s The ciub will have three representatives of the Silver Fern class—a 12-foot sailing dinghy designed by Mr Arch. Logan, of Stanley Point, Auckland. The dinghies will be owned by Messrs F. Brennan and A. Thompson (Awatea), R. Blacktopp (Rascal), and H. Blanchfield (Bounty). This class is practically a miniature of the M class, which was also designed by Mr Logan. It carries the modern Bermuda type of mainsail and a small jib, set on the stem, eliminating the bowsprit as the M class does. A class which is popular on the Coast is the 18-foot yacht. Two members of the club, Messrs E. Smith and C. Haines, are building a new boat of this class. It is carvel built, Marconi rigged, and will carry 200 square feet of sail. The other yachts of this class which will sail in club races are:— Mako (P. McDonald and R. Donovan), Mystic (G. Scott and C. Brown), Sea Fox, and the veteran lanthe. The lastmentioned is 30 years old, and has been in active use since it was built. This year the yacht has been completely overhauled and rerigged with a Marconi sail. There will be four Wakatere class boats, one Takapuna, one Idle Along, four dinghies, five 18-fpoters, and one 15-footer in the club’s fleet. , MARIST BROTHERS’ SCHOOL • - HOUSE COMPETITION FINISHED A successful house competition, organised by the Marist Brothers ,at Greymouth, was finished on Wednesday, when St. Patrick’s won both the A and B grade cricket matches, off-’ setting the wins of St. Joseph’s in the rounders. , ... The final points, without punctuality marks, were: St Patrick’s 916, St. Paul’s 918, St. Joseph’s 898, St, Columba’s 881. With points for punctuality counted, the placings were: St. Patrick’s 808, St. Joseph’s 796. St. Paul’s 758, St. Columba’s 753. The competition was well organised, and the boys were enthusiastic about it. Both summer and winter sports were included in the competition, and with every boy in the school taking an active part all were given the benefit of the games.
