ARMISTICE DAY AT REEFTON The two minutes’ silence was observed at Reefton on Armistice Day. Both the fire bell and the school bell were tolled to mark the hour of 11 a.m., and all traffic was stopped. There was no public ceremony held to mark the occasion, but the silence was very well observed. Personal Mr E. McPherson, of the staff of the Department af Mines, who has been in Reefton for the prospecting scheme of the department, has returned to Wellington. The death occurred at the Inangahua Hospital of an old resident of the Rappahannock Valley, Murchison, Mr Albert Terril. Mr Terril was 68 years of age, and is survived by a widow and one step son. DENNISTON BRANCH Mrs J. Allan presided at the monthly meeting of the Denniston branch of the Women’s Institute. A demonstration, by Mrs Cockburn on honeycomb work was much appreciated. The competition, “Something made from a flour bag," was won by Mrs W. Thomas, with Mrs M. Brodie 2, and Mrs D. Cockburn 3 in the plain section, and Mrs J. Worgan 1, Mrs J. Anderson 2, Mrs T. Muir'3 in the fancy work section. MARSHALLVALE Mrs Brock presided over a good attendance of members at the Marshallvale Women’s Institute, when several new members were welcomed. Mr Brock with a number of his school pupils, gave a demonstration of folk dancing, and taught the members two new dances. The competition, “Something new from something old,” was won by Mrs L. Gibson* with Mrs J. Brownlie second, Mrs J, Warne third. KARAMEA BRANCH At Karamea Women’s Institute, an interesting and useful demonstration was given by Mrs H. Simpson on the making of woolly toys for Christmas. The competition for a Christmas gift (not to exceed 2s 6d) was won by Mrs Halkett, with Mrs Hodgson second. PLACEMENTS AT GREYMOUTH The improvement in the. number of placements at the Greymouth Placement Office last week has been maintained this week. There has been a good demand for temporary and casual labour. The placements last week, with the total placements to date in parenthesis, were:—Permanent: Men, 9 (269); youths. 3 (47). Casual: Men, 2 (21); youths, nil (1). Temporary: Men, 7 (54); youths, nil (3). Total, 21 (395). Seven men were placed on State works, bringing the total for this class of work to 419.
