KAIAPOI SCHOOL COMMITTEE

NEW HEADMASTER WELCOMED

The chairman, the Rev. G. W. Hereto, presided at a special meeting of the Kaiapoi School Committee. Mr Hercus reported that an inspection had been made of the headmaster’s residence by members of the Canterbury Education Board. The board was unable to give consideration to the building of a new house or to selling any part of the property, but was prepared to carry out extensive repairs to the building to make it habitable. The work %vould be put in hand as soon as possible.

In view of the increase in the school's incidental allowance, it was decided to purchase a motor mower for use cn the playing grounds, the matter being left to the chairman and Messrs W. Tourell and T. Erickson.

Opportunity was taken to welcome the new headmaster (Mr J. P. Farrell), the chairman assuring him of the committee’s support.

CULVERDEN TENNIS CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING OF MEMBERS

The annual meeting of the Culverden Tennis Club was held recently. Tke following officers were elected: —President, Mr M. Bethell; vice-presi-dents, Messrs W. B. Macmillan, J. Creighton, L. H. Davison; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr F. R. Wilson; committee, Mesdames M. Bethell, H. Crofts. Creighton, D. Sterritt, Miss F. Mcckett, Messrs A. Hern, S. Maxwell, A. Shand. D. Anderson, H. Searle; auditor, Mr H. Searle; ladder secretary, Mrs. D. Sterritt. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance of more than £7l. It was decided to hold the opening day on October 17, and hold a town v. country competition. Mrs M. Bethell gave a trophy for the winners. Rainfall for September The total rainfall for September according to results kept by Mr L. Mills was 1.38 inches. There were 10 wet days, the heaviest fall of rain being on September 14, when 31 points were recorded. Social to Mr and Mrs Macdonald There was a large gathering of friends in the Culverden Hall recently when a social' was given to Mr and Mrs B. Macdonald. Mr Macdonald, who has been transferred to Rakaia, had been in the Amuri district for more than eight years. Mr M. Bethcdl spoke cf the splendid work he had done and the assistance he had given the various sports. He asked Mr and Mrs Macdonald to accept a travelling lug, glasses, and a water jug, ar.d a cheque. One-Act Plays Presented

An enjoyable evening of one-act plays was presented recently in the Cuiverden Hall by junior members of the Culverden branch of the Womenis Division of the Farmers’ Union and their friends. There was a large and appreciative audience. Those taking part in the play, “The Rest Cure,” were:—Mr R. Gudsel), Misses E. Rutherford, E. Draper, J. Loffhagen, E. Black. The characters in ■‘Legend” were portrayed by Mrs W. T. Rutherford, Miss A. Draper, Messrs L. Kingsbury and H. Searle. Parts in “Browne with an E” were taken by Misses E. McEwan, B. Thompson, C. Black, Messrs A. McClelland, L. Taylor, L. Denton, and in “The Christening” Mi'S W. T. Rutherford, Misses F. Mockett, ‘E. McEwan, E. Draper, J. Loffhagen, and Mr L. Taylor.

BANKS PENINSULA RABBIT BOARD

The Banks Peninsula Rabbit Board held its usual monthly meeting on Wednesday, when there were present Messrs H. A. Nutt (chairman), J. V. Chapman, V. Craw, T. Masefield. C. J. Richfield, and Stock-Inspector R. M. Henderson.

The inspector’s, rabbiter’s, and fence inspector’s reports were discussed. Accounts amounting to £79 10s 8d were passed for payment.

WADDINGTON METHODIST CHURCH HOLDS SHOW

Success attended the first spring flower show arranged by members of the Waddington Methodist Church, which was held in the Sheffield Hall recently.

The show was opened by the Rev. W. Averj*. There was a pleasing display of cut flowers, produce, cooking, and needlework. A special display of spring flowers, for exhibition only, was staged by Mr Avery. At the close of the show, a sale of goods was held, Mr F. A. Bull being auctioneer.

LITTLE AKALOA TENNIS CLUB

Mr V. Craw presided at the annual meeting of the Little Akaloa Tennis Club.

The following officers were elected: —President, Mr V. Craw: vice-presi-dents, Messrs R. E. Waghorn, C, Craw, and R. N. Waghorn; club captain, Mr R. M. Craw: vice-captain, Mr Salt; secretary, Mr R. M. Craw; court manager, Mr P. J. Waghorn: committee, Messrs A. Salt, H. Craw, P. J. Waghorn. and R. H. Waghorn, Mesdames Murphy, R. N. Waghorn. and A. G. Waghorn.
