BUSINESS PREMISES ENTERED

THEFT OF CIGARETTES AND MONEY AT RANGIORA

Three Rangiora business premises were broken into on Wednesday night and an unsuccessful .attempt was made to enter a fourth. Several packets of cigarettes were taken from one shop and £2 from an office.

The front doors of Hawkins. Ltd.’s grocery shop, in High street, of the office of W. C. McCracken, wood and coal merchant, in Ashley street, and of the garage of Morrell's, Ltd., in the same street, were forced open with tools like a tyre lever and a round file. Mr McCracken’s office was ransacked and there was scarcely an article in its place when the theft was discovered yesterday morning. A sum of £2 was taken and the handle of the safe showed signs of having been tampered with, but it had not been opened. The loss of several packets of cigarettes is reported by Hawkins, Ltd., but so far nothing has been found to be missing from Horrell's garage.

Front and back doors and a front window withstood attempts made to force an entrance into Herron’s garage and service station at the corner of High and Durham streets. The burglaries were not discovered until the proprietors went to open their premises yesterday morning. Personal Paying his first visit to New Z aland since he left it 54 years ago, Mr E. J. Hunnibell, of Chicago, will arrive at Rangiora next Tuesday, and will stay with his sister, Mrs W. A. Rowse. 'Mr Hunnibell, who is the eldest son of the late Mr and Mrs L. Hunnibell, of Rangiora. was born in England and came to the colony with his parents when he was three years of age. He spent his childhood at Rangiora but travelled to Australia at the age of 19. After some months there, he went to England, ana two years later made his home in America, where he has lived ever since. He will spend some months in his home town. Musical Comedy to be Produced A meeting held on Wednesday evening to discuss the possibility of holding a musical revue, in aid of the fund for a memorial hall at the Rangiora High School, made arrangements for the production of a musical comedy in February. There will be a cast of about 50. Mr A. Haigh will be producer and Mrs A. L. Lockhart is acting as organiser. Bowling Tournament Proposed Provided that permission is granted bv the Canterbury Bowling' Centre, a rink bowling tournament will be held in Rangiora on Labour Day. This decision was made at a meeting of the Rangiora Bowling Club on Wednesday evening. Sales of Fishing Licenses Though the demand for fishing licenses in the Rangiora district was small at the beginning of the season, sales have since increased. Dealers reported yesterday that they had sold as many as at the'’corresponding time last season Croquet Player Honoured Mrs R. R. Gillanders, formerly president of the Rangiora Croquet Club, who will leave soon to reside in Christchurch. was entertained by members of the club at an enjoyable afternoon yesterday. There was a large attendance and a progressive tournament was played, the winners being Mesdames J. Dickson (senior) and A. C. Benjes (junior). Mesdames M. Golding and H. J. Mehrtens were the winners of the senior and junior lucky number competitions respectively. For members, the president (Mrs J. C. Banfield) presented Mrs Gillanders with a hanging mirror and extended best wishes for the future. Regent Theatres,

TAI TAPU-GREENPARK FARMERS’ UNION

The Tai Tapu-Greenpark Farmers’ Union meeting was held in the Ladbrooks Hall, with Mr Fleming presiding. Dr. Franklin gave an address on nfilk fever in cows and ewes, and on other animal ailments. He also, by means of a chart, explained the process cf grass drying, an entirely new method of procuring the hay. Dr. Franklin said that the grass drying was a very popular method in the Old Country and that it would probably be usad in New Zealand before long.

TENNIS CLUB AT TAI TAPU

Tire annual meeting of the Tai Tapu Tennis Club was held with Mr G. Mangels presiding A vote of sympathy was passed with the family of Mrs M. P. Suckling, who had been honorary secretary of the club for the last 35 years. Officers were elected as fo’iows:— Patron, the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes: president. Mr G. Mangels; vice-presi-dents, Mrs R. M. Morten, Mrs H. Dulieu, Messrs J. N. Robihson. H. A. Wheeler, W. Walls, J. G. Fiecken; club captain, Mr A. Mangels; secretary and treasurer, Mr D. Suckling. Opening day 'was fixed for to-mor-row.

GLENMARK TENNIS CLUB The annual meeting of the Glenmark Tennis Club was held with the Rev. H. G. Hawkins presiding. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted. It was decided to hold opening day on October 17.
