APPOINTMENT OF TEACHERS

LAST TERM CHANGES CONDEMNED'

PROTEST TO BE MADE BY SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The Ashburton Borough School Committee met last evening with the chairman (Dr. J, Connor) presiding.

The Canterbury Education Board advised that an increase of about 44 per cent, would be allowed on the committee’s incidental allowance from April 1. Arrears amounting to £29 14s were forwarded to the committee with the stipulation that 10 per cent, of the increase was for school ground improvements. The board advised further that its foreman would report on the erection of a gate on the Park street frontage to the school ground to eliminate the entrance at the corner of Park and Short streets, which was considered to be a menace to the safety of children. The report of the headmaster (Mr H. Colquhoun) said that the roll was 422. The school would be entitled to be raised to grade 6B next year. The medical nurse, agricultural instructor, and inspector of dental clinics who visited the school were pleased with the work and surroundings. Ten children had raised £1 13s for improvements to the grounds. It was decided to close the school on the Ashburton and Christchurch show days. It was agreed to try to arrange for the visit of a party of children to the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society’s hatchery. Miss M. Lucas resigned from tha position of assistant mistress because of her appointment as infant mistress at the Rakaia School. It was decided to protest against changes of teachers during the last term of the year, as this was held not to be in the interests of the children. It was decided to recommend the Canterbury Education Board to' appoint Miss S. M. Cruicksank, Raukapuka, Geraldine, as infant mistress. Messrs W. H. Sarney and A. L. Jones were asked to approach the Ashburton Swimming Club to try to arrange for the control of the school baths.
