WELLINGTON. October 7,
With the observance of the customary formalities, the new Government member for Manukau (Mr A. G. Osborne) to-day took his seat in the House of Representatives for the first time. The by-election in Manukau to elect a successor to the present High* Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan) was held only a week ago to-day, but the speedy return of the writ enabled Mr Osborne to present himself promptly as a member of Parliament. At the opening of to-day’s sitting. Mr Speaker (the Hon. W. E. Barnard) read the formal declaration of Mr Osborne’s election, and then the new member, accompanied by the two Government whips—Mr J. O’Brien (Westland) and Mr A. S. Richards (RoskilD— advanced to the Speaker’s chair to take the oath, and subsequently to sign the records. There was applause as he was conducted to the seat on the cross benches which he is to share with Mr A. G. Hultquist (Govt., Bay of Plenty).
