CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY trinity UNIVERSITY BEATEN HV ONE GOAL • By beating University by the narrow margin of one goal. Trinity won the Canterbury Hockey Association’s championship for the third successive season. With only two more rounds to be played. Trinity has a lead of four points. It is probable that the senior competition will be declared closed and practice games arranged on the next two Saturdays between the representative team and a second team that has yet to be selected to play Southland at Invercargill. . „ Except for the match between Trinity and University, little interest was taken In the competition games, Which provided patchy hockey. The wet state of the grounds caused the postponement _of all women’s hockey except the senior trials and the fourth and fifth grade men’s and schools’ hockey., The result of the games leaves Trinity With a lead of four points on Technical, which has replaced University as run-ners-up. ... ... TECHNICAL (4) V. SELWYN (3), The game between Selwyn and Technical was evenly contested, but neither team was at full strength, and the wet slippery ground made first-class hockey difficult. Selwyn made the pace in the early stages of the game, and Technical had to defend two penalty corners in the first JO minutes. At the third attempt Cornish accepted a pass from Worinald and went in to score cleverly. Technical redoubled its effort and the forward line rushed play to Selvvyn’s end where the Selwyn defence was severely tested by Cole and Lohrey. Lohrey finally broke through and equalised. Shortly after Cole received a pass from Lohrey and netted with a quick shot. Selwyn attacked and L. Dawe netted the equalising goal. Half-time score! Selwyn 2, Techm On resuming, Technical attacked solidly and Lohrey again scored. T. Burtt sent Wormald aWay with Cornish in support. Hayes passed the ball to Wormald. who equalised the scores. Sterling defence by Meynell and Hailey kept Technical's goal clear from repeated onslaughts by Cornish, Wormald and Dawe, but play gradually went back to the other end. and a penalty corner gave Lohrey a chance to score the winning goal, Final score: Technical 4, Selwyn 3. Referees i Messrs C. Bellamy and R. Montgomery, SYDENHAM (3) V. RED CLIFFS (1) Sydenham had all the better of the game in beating Redcliffs by 5 goals to 1. Redcliffs played without a goalkeeper. Except for ah occasional dash by the Redcliffs forwards, Sydenham had its opponents on the defensive for the first quarter of an hour, but Thomson and T. Burke kept the goal clear for a spell, and Q. Burke and Pale rushed play to Sydenham’s end. Play soon returned and Wootcock opened Sydenham's account. A few minutes later he scored a second goal. Le Page initiated several promising movements for Redcliffs, hut Dash and Simpson were playing well, and Rhind in goal made several good saves. Halftime came with the score; Sydenham 2. Redcliffs 0. Redcliffs rearranged its team. Thomson going up to the forward line, but little improvement was made. After two attempts had been cleared by T. Burke, Woolcock seqred his third goal. Redcliffs renewed its efforts and was rewarded when Thomson netted. Redcliffs was working hard, but failed to penetrate Sydenham's defence, and play moved to the other end, where Clack netted the fourth goal. Milne added a fifth goal for Sydenham from a scramble. An even game at Lancaster Park ended ih favour of Trinity by 1 goal to 0. The play was even all through. University was the first tq attack, am} Trinity had to withstand a succession of penalty corners early in the game. Trinity worked play to the other end, but offside play gave relief. A shot by Radcliflc followed a combined movement oy the Trinity forwards, but missed ,by inches, A clever run and centre by PMcCormick gave Badcllffe another, chance, but Hall cleared well. Poor circle work lost University a golden opportunity from a penalty corner, and Trinity attacked, but Shlllito relieved. Half-time came With no score. . „ University opened the second spell with a series of solid offensives and Trinity’s goalkeeper pad a busy time. Trinity gradually forded play back, and Loader sent ilia forwards away to test the University defence. H&ll made a clever save, but Trinity returned and Rogers centred well jor N. Bowden to net thti only goal of {he match. Trinity 1, University 0. Duffleld made a solo effort and reached Trinity’s circle, where he lost possession. University was pressing hard but failed to find the net, and the game ended: Trinity 1, University 0.
