RUGBY LEAGUE SCHEME TO RAISE FUNDS DELEGATES TO CONFER WITH CENTRE Suggestions for widening the social activities of Rugby League clubs in Christchurch, both to raise money to assist the game, and to renew interest in the code, were discussed at a meeting of club delegates and members of the executive last evening. Clubs were asked to send representatives to a later meeting to elect a committee to cooperate with the executive. Mr W. S. E. Moyle, who presided, explained that the* purpose of the meeting was to arrange for the holding of club social evenings, the proceeds of which could be used to assist the finances of the clubs. He suggested that club supporters might visit other clubs, and that the visits could be returned. When members saw that there was enthusiasm in their club beyond that for the games played on Saturday afternoons, it was a strong incentive to increase the support the club received.

The engendering of a spirit of friendly rivalry among the clubs was one of the aims of the scheme, said Mr R. A. Drury. The league wished to see its players properly uniformed, as in Australia and Great Britain, and a set of jerseys might be awarded to the club which raised most money. About £IOO was the immediate object of the appeal. The running of the league cost about £IOO a year, and as the game advanced, the league hoped to obtain an enclosed ground of its own, where it could charge for admission.

Mr H. B. Rogers said that ever since he became secretary of the league, four years ago. the league had been struggling for funds. He thought that raffles would return a satisfactory profit; in one season the Sydenham Club had raised £IOO from raffles.

Mr Rogers said that it was difficult nowadays to raise money for the league. There seemed to have been a decline in the club spirit, and ho thought that this proposal would assist in restoring the spirit of unity. The suggestion that all clubs should work together, rather than that efforts should be individual, was made by Mr R. H. Whitley (Linwood). He was certain that by this method public interest would be aroused. Mr P. Cotton, of the Referees’ Association, suggested that clubs should be asked to form women’s committees, and that they should be induced to compete against each other. Mr B. Stapley, also of the Referees’ Association, supported the holding of a queen carnival. By such an effort, the Woolston Club had raised nearly £9OO several years ago for the establishment of Monica Park.

Mr W, Young pledged the support of the junior management committee in any scheme undertaken by the league. Mr Drury moved that clubs each appoint two women and two men to attend a meeting in a fortnight’s time, from which a committee to act with the centre would be formed. The delegates present could explain to their clubs that the clubs would share in the proceeds, and the club raising most money would win a set of uniforms.

Mr H. A. King, of the Referees’ Association, considered that the finances of the centre should be set in order before the clubs received a share of the proceeds. If the centre raised enough money, say to send a, team to Auckland, players would be encouraged and clubs would receive the benefit indirectly. The motion was carried. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE The executive of the Canterbury Rugby League held only a short meeting last evening, so that members could later meet club representatives to discuss the raising of funds by social gatherings. There were present at the meeting Messrs W. S. E. Moyle (in the chair), R. A. Drury, and H. B. Rogers (secretary). C. M. Garrett (Hornby) and J. Burfitt (Riccarton) were regraded from senior to junior.

The registrations of N. J. Pettit (Sydenham), A. Lawrence (Linwood), M Davis, and T. W. Miller (Waimairi) as seniors were accepted.

The New Zealand Council wrote saying that Mr L. A. Bench (Addington) had been deemed eligible for the league’s life-membership. At a meeting of the junior management committee, W. Taylor (Hornby) was regraded to third grade, and E. Clark and J. Morgan (Woolston) from junior to third grade. Clough end M. James (Linwood) were transferred to Waimairi.

Twenty registrations were approved. For playing unwelghed boys, the Sydenham sixth grade team was penalised by losing the points it had won in its games with St. Joseph's and Waimairi.

The meeting also decided that clubs fielding, on and after May 23 players who had not paid their registration fees, should lose points already won. Mr H. Pugh was elected assistant secretary.
