NEW CATHEDRAL AT NAPIER
APPEAL FOR HELP IN GREAT BRITAIN A letter in the Church of England newspaper of March contains an appeal from Dean J. B. Brocklehurst to members of the church in Great Britain for financial support to rebuild a cathedral at Napier in place of the one that was destroyed by the earthquake in 1931. "It is unquestionably a fact that had someone from New Zealand visited the Mother Country and made an appeal at the time, the necessary money would have been forthcoming," states Dean Brocklehrust in his letter; "but we rebuilt a temporary wooden church on the site of the cathedral within a few months. Then came the financial depression.
"In spite of this double knock, our people have not only supported" the church, but have started a 'Friends of the Cathedral' fund, as a gesture of their keenness to rebuild the cathedral. Knowing they cannot do this unaided, I have come to England to raise funds for it. It is estimated to cost from £50.000 to £60.000. "Viscount Bledisloe, our former Gov-ernor-General, is supporting this appeal and helping in many ways."
