CUT COUNCIL'S ROAD STAFF A NUMBER OF MEN RESIGN (THE PSBBS Special Service.] NELSON, AprU 14. Because they refused to work with one particular employee a number of the Nelson City Council's road staff ended their employment yesterday. On April 8 a letter signed by about 11 men engaged on road work was received by the city engineer saying that the men refused to continue working with one particular employee. On the following day the city engineer replied to the .letter expressing regret that the men wished to discontinue working for the council. Those who signed the letter, with the exception of some who were evidently under a misunderstanding concerning its contents, terminated their employment yesterday. Census Figures The population of Motueka borough on census night was 2187, showing a substantial increase on the 1926 census figure of 1524. The returns showed that there were 1078 males and 1100 females, a total of 2178. The 1926 figures were 762 males, 762 females. The census was taken at a time when there were many visitors to the district for seasonal work in the hop and tobacco industries.
