FIRST SERIES OF CONCERTS IN JULY
At the adjourned annual meeting of the Ellesmere Choral Society, held on Thursday evening, Mr A. J. Henderson presiding, nine new members were elected and it was decided to carry on for another year, the first series of concerts to be given early in July and the second at the end of November or early in December. Officers elected were—Patroness. Miss M. Nixon; president, Mr A, J. Henderson; vice-presidents, the Rev. S. Bailey, Dr. W. A. Johnston and Messrs F, Rowell, L. G. Eade, and F. B. Woodard; librarian, Miss C. O’Gotnvaiv; sec* , retary and treasurer, Mr J, Ormandy; committee. Mesdames W. C, Eggelton. and W. Martin, Misses ,M. Nixon and M. Eade, and the officers. Friendly Croquet Match A friendly match played at Leeston between teams representing Dunsandel and Leeston Clubs resulted in a win for the Dunsandel Club by five games to two. SOCIAL AT SOUTHBRIDGE The first of a series of euchre socials held in connexion with St James’ Anglican Church was well attended. The most successful players were Mesdames A. J. Inwood and W. Lilley and Messrs N. Neale and J. Lilley. The ladies provided supper. Missionary Union Mrs J. A. Carr presided at a meeting of the Southbridge branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, Mrs M. Hunter was elected president until the annual meeting, to be held in June. Arrangements for the annual service on Good Friday were discussed, and it was announced that Miss Webster, of the China Inland Mission, would give an address on Thursday. St. Saviour’s Guild At the annual meeting of the Southbridge branch of St. Saviour’s Guild the officers elected were: —President, Mrs A. G. Thompson; vice-presidents, Mesdames W. Lilley and A, C. Greenwood; secretary. Miss E. Maw. The president and retiring secretary (Miss M. Patterson) were presented with posies in appreciation of their work. KIRWEE FOOTBALL CLUB The annual meeting of the Kirwee Football Club was held recently, with the Rev. T. Paterson presiding. The balance-sheet, which showed a credit of £8 17s lid for the past season, was adopted. The election of officers resulted; — Patron, Mr M, Wilson; president, the Rev. T. Roper, H. Walker, W. Calder, B. Calder. W. Stott, R, McKercher, C. Wilson, D. Megowan, A. Aitken, and R. Wilson; afternoon tea official, Mr R. Roper; club captain, Mr R. W. McMeekan; coach, Mr A, Aitken. The opening day was fixed for March 28. Women’s Institute The anual meeting of the Kirwee Women’s Institute was held recently. The following officers were elected;— President, Mrs Arthur Thompson; vicepresidents, Mesdames R. W. McMeekan, A. Anderson, and D. Kelly; secretary, Miss E, Westaway; treasurer, Mr McMeekan; committee, Mesdames Selby, Coffey, Gillman, McKie, Stott, Weir. Turner, Paterson, and Misses M. Selby and P. Roper; sales table, Mrs P. Turner and Miss Joyce Anderson; competitions, Miss Jean McKie; librarian, Mrs W. L, Stott; press correspondent and "Home and Country,” Mrs A. Anderson; tea hostess, Mrs Burleigh; social half-hour, Mrs Kelly and Miss R, FrizzelL Congratulations were extended to Mrs A. Anderson, who won the trophy in the thrift class at the Malvern arts and crafts exhibition. The exhibits judged by the Rev. T. Paterson and Mr G. Batstone resulted as follows; Best bloom: Miss E. Westaway 1 and 3, Mrs A. Anderson 2. Jar of flowers: Miss E. Westaway 1 and 3, Mrs McMeekan 2. Cup and saucer; Mrs Kelly 1. Mrs A. Anderson 2, Mrs L. Davies 3. WOODEND A social was held in the church, when songs by Miss Myrle Little, Mrs D. Robinson, the Rev. H. Ford, Mr H. Robertshaw, Masters Rob Crawford and Geoff Smith, and recitations by Mrs H. Robertshaw and the Misses Sadie, Valmai and Ailsa Quinn were much enjoyed by the large gathering. Miss Marjorie Sloane was the accompanist. After the programme, Mr A. Smith sold the produce, and a dainty supper was served, SHEFFIELD A meetin" of the Sheffield Football Club’s dance sub-committee was held in the domain sports pavilion recently. Ar-; rangements were made for the annual ball, which will be held on April 16. Mr Roy Townshend was appointed master of ceremonies. Personal Mr R. Byers, jun. (Otamita, Gore), is visiting the Rev. L. W. Long and Mrs Long, "The Parsonage,” Waddington. HAWARDEN The following additional games have been played in the Hawarden Tennis Club’s competitions:— Women’s Singles ChampionshipFinal: Miss J, Fisher beat Miss G. Newman, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. Men’s Singles Championship—Semifinal: G, Mason beat F. J. Rydings, 6-2, 7-9, 7-5; J. T. Lowe beat H. Mackie, 6-4, 6-2. HALSWELL The third of a series of cards parties and dances was> held under the management of the hall committee. The proceeds are to assist the building fund. Competitions at cards were won by Mrs Barnett and Mrs Ireland, Messrs W. Collins and P. Symes. In the danco hall the lucky spot Boston dance was won by Miss M. Hayes and Mr Rogers. Miss Hanna and Mr Hertford won the Monte Carlo one-step and Misses D. Brown and D. Chapman won- the lucky spot waltz. Music for the dance was played by Colin Smart’s orchestra, with extras by Mr W. Cowlin. Messrs H, Hayes, F. R. Wilhelm, and N. Gardiner were masters of ceremonies. CUST The Cust branch of St, James’ Ladies’ Guild held its annual jam afternoon in aid of St. Anne’s Home, Christchurch, in the Parish Hall on Thursday. A good response was given, and more than 4001 b of jam, a quantity of butter and sauce, was handed in. Mrs H. S. Turner (Christchurch) gave a very interesting address on her trip to England.
