NEW FIRE ALARM SYSTEM PROMPT CALLS TO RANGIORA STATION To enable the Rangiora telephone exchange to give prompt alarms of fires of which they are advised by supscribers, a private fire alarm box Wm soon be installed in the exchange and a private telephone will connect the exchange with the fire station. Upon receipt Of an alarm by telephone, a*. exchange attendant will operate the alarm, which will be connected with the brigade’s system so that the siren will be sounded and alarm bells rung in the homes of firemen. The first man to arrive at the station will ring the exchange on the private wire and find out the situation of the fire. As there is no permanent attendant at the fire station, calls during the day are usually sent to the Borough Council office, and at night to the telephone exchange. In the latter event, an alarm can only be conveyed to the brigade by an exchange attendant breaking the alarm box opposite the fire station and the exchange staff is not always at liberty to leave the switchboard to do so. The new system will provide a continuous service for the receipt of alarms and will minimise the delay in calling the brigade to a fire. It will be installed by the borough electrical staff.
