▼ EVENTS AT TAYLOR’S MISTAKE CUP AND CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS DECIDED After two postponements because of bad weather, Kesteven Cup day was held at Taylor’s Mistake yesterday, when perfect weather conditions prevailed. The day was warm. There was no surf running, and for that reason the competitions were rather disappointing from the point of view of providing a test of surf ability. The programme in the morning consisted of the Taylor’s Mistake Goodwill Bowl, an intermediate race for two representatives from each club. The race resulted in a win for H. Goldsmith, the son of the donor, who scored a decisive win from his club-mate, R. Hatchwell, of the Taylor’s Mistake Club. The event was followed by the Black and White Cup, a surf relay race for teams of four, the first mart swimming with a belt. New Brighton, the holders; won the race, but were disqualified when their last man, A. T. F. Stokes, started too soon. It was bad luck for New Brighton, whose representatives put up a fine performance. The race was therefore awarded Taylor’s Mistake. The senior resuscitation championship was the last event to be decided in the morning. ■ , In the afternoon a grand parade of competing teams was followed by the Kesteven Cup event. The officials were;—Kesteven Cup: Marshal, Mr N. "G. Winter; assistant marshal, Mr D. V. Wilson; referee, Mr A. I. Cottrell: judges. Messrs C. J. Kite, W. H. Benson, and C. A. Gardiner and J. Reid. There was a dead calm sea when the eight competitors left in line for the buoy, 150 yards distant. Horsfall was the first into action, the order half-way out being Horsfall, Stokes, Hatchwell. Goldsmith and Mac Donald, th e lastnamed making the best line from the buoy. Goldsmith was first round, followed by Mac Donald, Stokes, and Horsfall, the others being well strung out. Half-way back it was apparent that Goldsmith had the race well in hand, and he reached the finishing line 30 yards ahead of Hatchwell, who was a similar distance In front of Stokes. The rest of the competitors were well back. The winner’s time was 3min 59 2-Ssec. Black and White Cup The teams were:—Taylor’s Mistake, J. A. Young (belt), M, R. Rattray, G. Low, and D. H. Rimmer was .first round the buoy and maintained the lead to the beach, followed by Young, Herrick, and Cooper. Rimmer’s time was 4min> The next man for North Beach was Mac Donald, who swam a long course away from the 1 direction of the buoy. He was followed by Low, McKenzie, and Stevens, With the Waimairi and South Brighton representatives well in the rear. McKenzie put up a great performance to pass MacDonald and -Low. Low also swam well and headed Mac Donald. McKenzie’s, time was 3min 58sec. Stokes had a lead of about 20 yards from Symes on the last lap. Newell (North Beach) was, close behind, followed by Candy (Sumner). Stokes maintained his lead to the buoy and on the return journey he increased his advantage, especially when Symes swam well off the direct line: Third place was filled by Newell (North Beach), followed by Candy. Nicholls, and Cooper. Owing to Stokes having started, too soon, New Brighton were disqualified, and the race was awarded to Taylor’s Mistake.
