♦ LIGHT HEAVY-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP LEWIS RETAINS TITLE (Received March 15, 8. p.m.) ‘ NEW YORK, March 14. John Harvey Lewis, 172 Jib, the world’s light heavy-weight champion, VAs ship at Madison Square Garden tonight, winning a 15 rounds’ decision from Jock McAvoy, 168Jlb. According to the. newspapers and ringside observers McAvoy won only one o£ the 15 rounds, scoring at the end of the fourth round, when he took the offensive and landed a series of hard punches on the negro champion’s face and head. During the remainder of the bout the heavier Lewis scored an impressive point margin by, clever punching tactics and aggressivel fighting. By the end of the ninth round Lewis had considerably weakened McAvoy, and from .then on tried desperately for a knock-out. The Englishman showed endurance, however, and fought gamely to the final bell, landing several effective punches in the final round, but in doing so took much punishment. The decision of the referee and the two judges was unanimous. About 15,000 persons saw the bout. AMERICAN VISITOR TO AUSTRALIA • (Received March 15, 7.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, March 15. Cabled advice has been received in Sydney from America that Maxie Rosenblpom, the former cruiser-weight champion of the world, will leave for Australia by the next boat. He will meet Palmer at the Sydney Stadium in about eight weeks’ time.
