“INSOLENT YOUNG MEN”

CHARGE OF OBSTRUCTING CONSTABLE

Two young men, who were described by Sub-Inspector D. A. Mac Lean as very insolent indeed and very supercilious. appeared in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Mr E. C. Levvey. S.M. Both of them were charged with obstructing a police constable in the execution of his duty • Evidence was given by Constable W. F. Rendle that he had called on one of these two men to stop, but that both had ridden on. This happened east of Colombo street, and Constable Rendle then borrowed a bicycle and chased them, catching up with them opposite the Girls’ :Hign School. Here he laid his hand on the shoulder of one of the men who was cycling . without a light, and as he would not stop both the witness and accused fell to the ground. When they were asked by the constable why they had not stopped one of them replied in an insolent manner, "We don’t stop whenever a cop like you wants us to.” The man responsible for this wanted to make a complaint against the constable, and the three went to the police station together. The magistrate said, thatJt was obvious that both the young men had been as foolish as possible. He did not want to broadcast their foolishness, however, and ordered their names to be suppressed. He dismissed the charges, under the Offenders’ Probation Act, ordering the defendants to pay the costs.
