BRITISH DEFENCE PLANS
SUGGESTED APPOINTMENT OF MINISTER MR RAMSAY MACDONALD A POSSIBLE CHOICE LONDON, January 17. The pplitical correspondent of the “Manchester Guardian” says that the defence Ministers and chiefs of staff of the fighting services met four times during the week. They not only discussed rearmament plans, but also considered at length plans for co-ordinating defence. It is believed that it has been decided to appoint a Minister to undertake co-ordination. This does not mean the creation of a special Ministry, as it is believed that co-ordin-ation, and also the mobilisation of industry for war, may be attained by making the Minister for Defence chairman of the two existing subcommittees on Imperial Defence. Mr Ramsay Mac Donald, who has had long experience in presiding over the Committee on Imperial Defence, is favoured for the new position, which otherwise may be given to Sir Samuel Hoare if he is sufficiently restored to health.
