TRAVELLING LIBRARY FOR SCHOOLS
i. i . I FINDS AND BOOKS STILL NEEDED ] j The travelling library tor the rural j> schools of Canterbury, which was es- < j tablished last September by the Asi j sociation of Teachers of English of :; : Canterbury, has made considerable ' progress in the first two months of ' : i its existence. Already more than 1200 j boo!:.? have been sent out to 35 dif- | ferent schools, and the tutor-librar--1 \an, Mrs L. E. Rowlatt, has given talks on books at 12 schools, includI ins? Geraldine District High School in ! the south, and Springfield to the west. ; Although the library is doing well. I the committee is still very short of .'money and books. It is expected that ■there"will be a greater demand than ! ever for the books ne - :t term, and _ l subscriptions, donations, and gifts of "books 'not necessarily new) will be " ; most gratefully received by any mem- ; ! ber of the committee at Canterbury e | College. There is a demand for books \ I '"or standards lower than Standard V. t ", Though realising, however, that the ' 1 habit of reading is formed in these -1 lower standards, the committee finds e ! it impossible at present to include y ; them. Reauests for books have come i from schools as far distant as Ross t! cWestland) and Owen's River (Nel-r-!son), but the scheme operates only in i! Canterbury. The eagerness of the - j children to joyn up with the travelling r library, and the suggestions and coo I operation of their teachers, are proof i ' of the value of the scheme. -1 The committee hopes that some well- !,; organised system of travelling 11bi ; rarles for all the schools in New ZeahUand will soon be seriously considered land put into immediate effect.
