MATCH WITH MAORIS
EXTRA GAME FOR CANTERBURY SUGGESTED
A suggestion that an effort be made to arrange a match between Canterbury and the New Zealand Maori team at Lancaster Park after the latter team returns from Australia was made at last night's meeting of the management committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union. It was adopted, and the date for the proposed fixture is August 23. Dr. W. S. Seed said that he considered a match with the New Zealand Maori team should be sought by Canterbury. He suggested that the New Zealand Rugby Union be asked to arrange a match on August 28 in Christchurch.
It was already proposed that the Maori team should play against Auckland on August 17, and against Wellington on August, 21. Mr J. T. Burrows, while agreeing with the suggestion, said that he doubted if any New Zealand tour would be considered. He thought the team would disband on its return to New Zealand. On the motion of Dr. Seed it was unanimously decided to ask the New Zealand Union to arrange a match for August 23 at Lancaster Park.
PRESENTATION TO ALL BLACK CAPTAIN
OLD BOYS OF TIMARL HIGH SCHOOL Members of the Christchurch branch of the Timaru Boys' High School Old Boys' Association met at the Clarendon Hotel yesterday evening to bid farewell to Mr J. E. Manchester, an Old Boy of the school, who has been appointed captain of the All Blacks. In presenting Mr Manchester with a fountain pen the president, Mr M. J. Scott, spoke of the honour he had brought to the school and expressed confidence in his fulfilment of the trust placed in him. Mr Manchester, he said, carried the goodwill of all Old Boys, who were certain that he would accomplish well a task that was in many ways a difficult and arduous one.
In seconding the president's remarks, Dr. G. M. Gunn, a vice-presi-dent, said that to be chosen as an All Black was the hall-mark of Rugby football. In addition Mr Manchester possessed the qualities for the captain of such a team. It was a great honour to Christchurch that both the captain and the vice-captain were Canterbury men.
In reply Mr Manchester thanked members for their gift which, as coming from the Old Boys of the school, he regarded as a fine tribute.
SELECTOR RESIGNS A VvAIUARAPA SURPRISE {"THE PRESS Special Service.] MASTERTON.'JuIy 23. It is announced that Mr E. McKenzie, sole selector to the Wairarapa Rugby Union for the last 15 years or more, has resigned his position, his action, it is stated, being taken as a protest against the disappearance of 10 jerseys and other representative playing gear from the jersey bag after the representative match with Bush at Ekctahuna last week. Mr McKenzie refused to reconsider his decision to resign when the matter was discussed at a special meeting. Mr Quentin Donald was appointed sole selector for the remainder of the season, and his first duty was to choose the team to play against Wellington to-morrow.
