TRANSPORT LICENSES

MEETING OF NO. 8 AUTHORITY A sitting of the No. 8 Transport Licensing Authority was held at Timaru yesterday. Mr J. D. Hutchison { presided, and with him was Mr M. Rcthell. On behalf of South Canterbury carriers, Mr H. Gould entered a protest against the necessity of attending a sitting of the authority to have licenses considered. They thought that the business could be done without an unnecessary waste of time, and desired that, their protests be added to those already expressed in other parts of the Dominion. It was farcical that they should have to attend each year, when some persons were allowed to travel over the countryside without licenses, and yet have nothing said to them. He quoted a case in which a person had run between Christchurch and Dunedin on a 2s Cd license, and ino general license. If carriers had to come to the court for their licenses they should get some assurance that they would be protected. The chairman said that the question was not one for the authority but for the legislature. However, the board would pass on the protest to the proper quarter.

K. R. Wilson, Waimate, applied for a license to carry farm produce between Waihao Downs, Redcliff, and Tawai to the railway at Waihao Downs, and to carry back goods. As there were other licensed carriers in the district, the application was declined
