ASHBURTON EXCHANGE OF COURTHOUSE SITE

The approval of Cabinet to the exchange of the courthouse site for the section alongside the Public Library and Municipal Chambers was received yesterday by the Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods). Cabinet's decision was made following the visit of the Minister for Defence (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe) to Ashburton at the beginning of the month, when he conferred with the Mayor and Mr E. H. Orr (chairman of thp finance committee of the Ashburton Borough Council). Dr. G. I. Mi.ler, who has been the representative of the Canterbury Education Board on the High School Board of Governors fo- throe years, was elected chairman of the school board yesterday. Dr. Miller, who was president of the High School Old Pupils' Association last year, is the lirst old pupil of the school to occupy the position of cha.rman of the board. The Rev. G. Miller, father of Dr. Miller, was chairman of the board 12 years ago. Messrs W. Duff (secretary of the Methven Rugby Football Club), J. McDonald (Methven), and G. Cartwright (Ashburton) left with the AshlAu\on , Rugby representative team on its tour to Kaikcura, Blenheim, Nelson, and Motueka yesterday. They will return to Ashburton on August 4. Mr J. W. Bowden, who has been chairman of the Ashburton High School Board of Governors for 11 years, would not accept nomination for the position for a further term yesterday. Reference was made by board members to the able chairmanship of Mr Bowden. and it was decided to record appreciation of his services. The Rev. D. D. MacLachlan, from Waikaka Valley, has arrived at Ashburton to take over the charge of the Tinwald-Lagmhor-Flcmington Presbyterian Church, in succession to the Rev. W. Marshall, who retired. The induction will take place to-morrow afternoon. Mr L. A. Charles, who has represented the Canterbury Education Board on the Ashburton Technical High School Board of Managers for three years, has decided not to accept appointment for a further term. The Loyal Timvald Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., met, when the N.G. (Sister E. Bcnnison) presided. Tlio district officers paid an official visit, D.G.M. Bro. J. D. H. Donaldson, D.D.G.H. Bro. H. C. Patterson, D.S. Bro. A. C. Hardy, and members of the District Committee of Management being present. A motion of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Sister Schneider. Seven member.-; were reported sick, and £l2 sick pay was passed in their favour. The D.G.M. presented a P.G.'s collar and certificate to P.G. Bro. L. S. Millar. Ilßckcy Sub-Association

A meeting < the management committee of the Mid-Canterbury Men's Hockey Sub-Association was held, when the president 'Mr E. M. Gabites) presided. The South Canterbury Hockey Association's invitation to sci. . two teams to plav at Timaru on August 31 was accepted. The Canterbury Association wrote inviting threeteams to play at Christchurch on August 17. It was decided to inform the Canterbury Association that this date was already under olier to the Geraldine Association. The Methven Ladies' Hockey Club applied for permission to include men's sides in its six and five-a-side competition, and this was granted. The Ashburton Ladies' Hockey Association agreed to play one of its m'tches as a curtainraiser to the match between Mid-Can-terbury and Geraldine on August 17. Messrs S. M. Cassidy and L. Armstrong were appointed to represent the association at a conference to be held with the ladies' association for the purpose of arranging to co-opercte in matches on Saturday and August 17. 1 With a view to improving the junior ' competition, the secretary (Mr Ca.s- ---■ sidy) was requested to take the names' : and addresses of any players who • would be willing to play in the junior 1 grade.
