ASHBURTON GIFT OF BROWN TROUT OVA Owing to the floods in the Ashburton river the Ashburton Acclimatisation Society has been unable to trap sufficient brown trofut from which to obtain eggs for hatching purposes this season, and the Noeth Canterbury Society has given 400,000 brown trout ova to make up the deficiency. The ova, which were obtained from fish trapped in the Selwyn river, were taken delivery of at the Greenpaik hatchery on TuesoSay by the ranger (Mr D. McSDougall), and have been placed in the Ashburton Society s new hatchery. Charge of Theft Charged with tbtc theft of a bicycle valued at £3, the property of Thomas Cyril Burke, of Oacnaru, Charles Frederick Smith, labourer, aged 36, appeared before Mr W. Patterson, J.P., at the Magistrate's Court yesteruay. On the application of Sergeant J. i. Cleary a remand was granted unt.il tomorrow. Pttrsonal Mr M. F. O'Rfcilly, who left last evening on transfer to the staff of the Public Trust ohice, Christchurch, v/as met by the stall of the Ashburton Public Trust office yesterday and was presented with a set of hair brushes by the manager CMr E. J. O'Brien). Mr I. B. Mackie, of the staff of the Bank of New Sonth Wales, is on sick leave and is being relieved by Mr J. M. Mitchell OChristchurch). Methodist pirn's Fellowship A meeting of the Methodist. Mens Fellowship was beld, when the president (Mr L. Storae) presided. Arrangement,; were made for a debate against the senior young men's Bible class at the next meeting, when the fellowship will take the affirmative side of the subject, "That radio is an asset. Messrs li. Watts, S. J. Goslin, and !•' T. Miles were selected to speak for the fellowship. An interesting address on the post and telegraph system was given oy Mr Stone. Suppet was served. Caxd Evening A successful "500" evening on behalf of the western queen in the carnival to raise funds fior the construction o£ a swimming basth at the Allenton School was hekt The winners of the prizes were Mrs Withell and Mi W. R. Mooclie, and of the consolation awards Miss Kennedy and Mr N. Jones. Mis., Joyce Chambers sang two solos, Ml;s R. Mclnnes playing the accompaniments. Hunt Club A meeting of the committee of tho Ashburton branch of the Christchurch Hunt Club was. held last evening. Mr A. J. Nicoli presided. Arrangements were made for meets on July 4 at Dromore, and on July 8 at Slringfe low s Corner. Arrangements were made foi the annual point-to-point on Mrs E. Begg's property, Wakanui, on July « Nominations for the point-to-point will close on July 1. Ashburton East School Jubilee At a meeting of former pupils of the Ashburton East School, held last eveninc it was decided to celebrate the jubilee on Saturday. Sunday, and Monday, of Easter. 1930. Mr F. Pntchard was' appointed chairman of the jubilee committee, and sub-committees were set up. Choral Festival For its first musical festival of the 193;'ji season, the Ashburton Choral Society presented a splendid programme at J-lis Majesty's Theatre last evening. Representatives of the Christchurch Harmonic Society were present. The programme was varied and the society anticipated the public taste in choral work. The brightness of the singing of the choir of <lO voices comprised one of the best festivals staged by the sociel{y. During the interval the Mayor, Mr W. H. Woods, congratulated the society on its performance, stating that the generous response from the public was stimulating to the members. He ex-< pressed the gratitude of the choir to the conductor, Mr Victor C. Peters, for the amount of work he had put into the production. lie also congratulated the Ashburton V/ornen's Institute on winning the institutes' choir competition. The first half of tho programme was devoted to the concert selection of "A Princess of Kensington" (Edward German). The chorus work throughout was well done, and undc-r the baton, the emphases were well brought out, although at times the male section did not anpear to sing with confidence. This was tbe first occasion on which the society drew from its own ranks for the solo» parts and the result was encouraging; Miss Lorrifi M. Acton fsoprano) took the part of Kenna, and gave a good rendering o? her work. She was called back in "/>» Mountain Stood Like a Stern Outpost." As Brook, Mr Winston T.
