and sang brightly with Miss Acton in the dupt. "Seven O'clock in the Morning." ivir C. Hopwood took the pait of Jelf. Everybody appeared to be at home in the "Bridal March,' which went with a swing. The second part of the programmo opened with "The Shepherds Dance (German), and "It Was a Lover and His Lass" (Morley), by the Ashburton District Women's Institute choir, which won the Hodgkin Cup recently, in a choir competition held by tutes in Mid-Canterbury and South Canterbury. The choir caught the spirit of the pieces, the harmony being particularly pleasing. The part-songs, "An Eriskay Love Lilt" (Roberton), and "Santa Lucia," were pleasingly sung, and the choir sang again in response to applause. In "The Challenge of Thor (Elgar) there was plenty of volume and expression, the unison of the voices being a tribute to the conductor. A happy interlude in the second half was the two Russian Fairy Tales, "Chant Religieux" and "Chant de Noel" (Laidow), by the orchestra, which gave a sympathetic portrayal of the work. Its treatment of "Marche Militaire" was very satisfying and was a fitting conclusion to an excellent entertainment, A variety of bright part songs, folk songs, choruses, and orchestral items v/as given for the remainder of the programme, which was as follows: Part songs. "John Peel" (J. E. West), "In This Hour" (Ciro Pinsuti); male chorus, "Down in Alabama" (Paul Edmonds); ladies' part song, "Oh, Where, Tell Me Where" (Roberton); folk songs, by Perev Godfrev, "The Poacher," "The Oak and The Ash," "Come, Lasses and Lads," "The Live Long Day I Dream," "To Alexis"; orchestral items, Russian Fairy Tales, "J'ai dance avee le Moucheron," and "Ronde" (Laidow).
