TIMARU J UNEMPLOYMENT A meeting of representatives of local bodies and other organisations was held , to consider the advisability of calling J a public meeting at which the unem- ; ployment position could be discussed, and to urge on the Government the abolition of the No. 5" scheme. Mr P. W. Wild (president of the Timaru Unemployed Workers' Union) was chairman. Mr F. Hilton moved that Mr Clyde Carr, M.P., call the attention of the Government to the increasing number of men being placed on sustenance and recommend the Minister for Employment to abolish the No. 5 scheme, the Government to Institute in its place a comnrehensive public works scheme, thus making it possible to employ all the employable unemployed, the men remaining on sustenance to be paid at the rate stated in the act of 1930. It ■was decided, however, on the motion of Mr P. W. Young (Junior Chamber of Commerce), that the resolution be referred to the bodies represented that night for an expression of opinion. It was further agreed, on the motion of Mr Carr, that the meeting urge upon the Government and Unemployment Board the utter inadequacy of present rates of unemployment relief, and the immediate necessity for their improvement. It wa3 decided to call another meeting for July 23, when the representatives present could report the attitude of the bodies they represented. Magistrate's Court Before Mr J. G. L. Hewitt. S.M., in the Magistrate's Court, yesterday, judgment was given for plaintiff by default in Dominion Motors. Ltd. v. D. Gloag, on a claim for £3 10s. The Inspector of Factories (Mr G. McKessar) proceeded against Benjamin Waison, garage proprietor, claiming a penalty of £lO on each of two breaches of the New Zealand Motor Mechanics Award. Mr W. D. Campbell appeared for defendant, who pleaded guilty. Mr McKessar stated that the new award, which came into force on October 1, required that _ assistants in their second year be paid £ 1 a week, and garage attendants in their fifth year £2 5s a week, or, if they were over 21 years of age, £3 9s 8d a week. In the first instance, defendant had paid an assistant in his second year 15s, instead of £l, and in the second case, had paid a employee £1 13s instead of £2 ss. The latter employee was 21 in February last, being thus entitled to receive £3 9s 8d a week. Mr Campbell stated that arrears had ; not been paid, but they would be paid. The magistrate said that he would feel more kindly disposed towards defendant if the arrears had been naid. He would adjourn the case until July 3, and if told then that all arrears had been paid, would take a different view of the case. Presentation for All Black With the object of making arrangements for a presentation to G. Adkins, of Timaru, who has been selected as an All Black,, a representative meeting of citizens, convened by the management committee of the South Canterbury Rugby Union, and presided over by the president of the union (Mr A. G. Knowles), appointed a committee to prepare subscription lists. The Mayor "Mr T. W. Satterthwaite) wrote enclosing a donation of £1 Is. It was de-j cided to circularise all sporting bodies] and schools in the district, seeking assistance. Caledonian Society The annual meeting of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society was held last night, with Mr R. A. Rodgers presiding. In moving the adoption of the annual report and balance-sheet, the chairman expressed pleasure that the year had resulted in a profit of: £231 3s lOd. In seconding the motion, Mr S. R. Burns said that the presence of the Grenadier Guards Band had resulted in the New Year's Day meeting proving so successful. . I Mr M. H. W ATM ATE * The monthly meeting of the Waimate County Council was presided over by Mr H. B. S. Johnstone. The finance committee reported that the balance in the bank was a debit of £922 18s lOd, but with £SOOO on fixed deposit the actual balance in June, 1935, was. a credit of £4077 Is 2d. The ! balance at the bank in June, 1934, was : a credit of £slOl 13s lid. The accounts presented totalled £.*2324 13s, and the receipts since the last meeting amounted to £836 13s. In the Lower Waihao water race account there was a credit balance in the bank of £IOO 0s sd, and on fixed deposit £."300, making the actual credit balance, £4OO 0s sd. It was resolved that the reconditioning of Dennehy's bridge, near Knottingley Park, be authorised, the estimate of: the engineer for the work being £2O. The New Zealand Counties' Association wrote requesting names of delegates to attend the conference In August. Cr. H. M. Whatman was appointed the council's delegate. The Public Works Department advised that the council's request for provision to be made for financial assistance towards metalling on Scannell's road, and for the erection of a light traffic bridge on the Farm Road creek, Halcataramea, would receive consideration when the estimates were being reviewed. The South Canterbury Hospital Board advised that regarding the proposed restoration of half of the 1931 salary cuts, an adjustment of the allocation levies would be necessary, and the council's share of the increased levy would be £lll 4a lid. The Unemployment Board wrote asking for particulars of any buildings proposed to be erected by any local or public body, and also that it was prepared to supply trees suitable for planting at a charge to local bodies of packing and freight. It was reported that 50 per cent, of the trees planted last year had failed owing to the dry weather. It was decided that the council should supply poisoned grain at halfprice for one week during the campaign against small birds, the date to be decided by the Farmers' Union. Rugby Sub-Union Mr J. C. Winning presided at a meeting of the Waimate Rugby Football Sub-Union. In reply to a request by the Timaru Boys' High School for a match with the Waimate junior representative team, it was decided to ask that the match be played on August 3, if possible. The draw for Thursday is as follows: —Seniors: Southern v. Glenavy, Old Boys v. Huimai. Juniors: Huimai v. Southern. Old Boys v. High School. Study of Economics At a meeting held at Morven, it was decided to form a class to study economics under the Workers' Educational Association scheme, and it Vvas reported that 25 persons had signified their willingness to attend the classes. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr J. K. Blair; leader, Mr S. G. McKejch; secretary, Mr A. A. Shearer. Mr KoKeich gave a lecture deali cs with the subject of economics in ratline, describing the nature and scope of the study. GERALDINE Mr A. W. Jones, of the staff of the Union Bank of Australia, will leave to-day for Wellington. He will be succeeded by Mr J. A. Stewart, of Blenheim. Miss Belmaine Burgess has returned to Woodend after a short holiday with Mr and Mrs J. T. Wright, of Orari Gorge. Mr Leslie Tonks, of Dunedin, has taken up duties at the Geraldine Post Office. Mr R. W. Jarrnan. formerly of the staff of the Geraldine Post Office, who has been transferred to the clerical staff at Wellington, is spending holiday leave in Geraldine before going north.
Presentation Members of the Geraldine Tennis Club met at the Burke estate rooms on Monday evening to say farewell to Mr A. W. Jones, who will leave shortly for Wellington. Mr G. Glen, president of the club, who presided, expressed appreciation of the work of Mr Jones as treasurer and later as secretary of the club. He congratulated him tin his promotion in the bank and wished him every success. Mr Glen presented Mr Jones with a travelling rug, on behalf of the members. Mr Jones made a suitable acknowledgment. Mr Glen also made reference to another loss to the club in the transfer to Wellington of Mr R. W. Jarman. He wished him success in his new sphere. Mr Jarman replied.
Cribbage The sixth round of the Geraldine and District Cribbage Association's competition was played on Tuesday night, and resulted as follows: Citizens 28 v. Orari Bridge 24; Oddfellows 25 v. South End 26; Bowlers 17 v. Raukapuka 33. The scores to date for the shield are: Bowlers 161, Citizens 158, Raukapuka 158, Oddfellows 150, Orari Bridge 143, South End 137. In the Williamson Memorial Cup competition, D. Mac Donald and G. W. Coombs (Citizens) lead with 47 games. Football The weekly meeting of the committee of the Geraldine Football Club was attended by the president (Mr W. H. Jackson) and Messrs L. S. Lorimer, I. Anderson, S. Lawson, J. Stevenson, L. IHacaulay presided at the monthly meeting of the Temuka branch of the Farmers' Union. Mr A. Bisdee reported that the council had agreed to purchase thrushes' and black birds' heads and eggs and make available to farmers poison 'd wheat fer combating the sparrow menace. The president said that the Women's .Division had taken up a campaign against hydatids. Farmers' methods of feeding dogs were largely concerned in the transfer of hydatid germs, and he suggested that farmers should attend a lecture on the subject to be given under thee auspices of the division. Reorganisation was brought up by the president, who stated that it would take mature consideration and would have to he considered nationally. It was agracd that this should be the subject for a special meeting, and in the meantime the president and secretary should investigate the proposal and bring: down a report for the meeting to consider. The president and _Mr o-. A. Dawey were appointed to act in conjunction with the Women's Division in arranging the annual social. Referring to the savings batfk scheme for the schoois, Mr A. J. \Davey thought that the scheme could be extended to the young men of the country, and it was agreed to discuss the question at the next meeting. ST. ANDREWS The weekly cribbage evening v/as held in the Pareora School and resulted in Mrs E. Bennison and Mr A. Dix winning the prizes. The sixweekly aggregate was won by Mrs E. Bennisoii, and Mr F. Hawtin. CLANDEBOYE Miss N. Liddle is spending a holiday in Dunedin. Mr L. Livesey has left on a holiday visit to Auckland and New Plymouth. Ttie M'eekly ping-pong evening run by the hall committee was held on Tuesday evening. A ladder was formed and challenges played, in view of a handicap tournament. Music for the dancing was played by Mr C. Kelland, with extras by Miss M. Clayton. Mr A. McLaren was master of ceremonies.
